Bought 2015 F Type R and guess what
Gents, I'm a long time M3 enthusiast who also rode and raced motorcycles for 2 decades.
I recently added to the stable of toys with a 2015 F Type R. Drove it once and fell in love. I spend a month looking for the right F Type and finally landed one that was darn near exactly what I wanted.
I asked all the questions and got written documentation about its history, ownership, repairs, maintenance, damage, etc. I received lots of detailed pics as well. I bargained down to the price I wanted using another similar car as leverage. Got it shipped and even that went perfectly.
Unloads off the truck and immediately I see a dozen or so rock chips on the hood of the car along with a horrible correction attempt using what appeared to be IRR rather than Salsa. No big deal to me but wife was not happy. Car was also filthy. No big deal, it was a long ride. Within 10 minutes of delivery, it's washed. Curb rash on one wheel....hmmm, still no big deal. It's a beautiful car.
Take it for a drive and CEL comes on after 20 minutes. Still feeling ok, these things happen I tell myself. OBD reader cannot read code. Auto zone reader also no luck.
Monday morning I stop by local dealer. Service guy gets in car and comes back and says CEL is off. Offers to look it over anyway but says I have to leave it overnight. I say no thanks but make an appointment to drop it next week for a full exam. Service guy pulls history and I see a full page of entries. Service guy starts making all kinds of thinking noises...hmmmm, hmmmm, interesting, hmmmmm. My heart starts to sink. He finally says wow, this car has a serious history. I'm dying as he tells me the engine blew up and was replaced 5,000 miles ago. Work took two months and a few trials to get it right. I'm speechless. DAMN. I thought I had covered all the bases, and then some.
I call the salesman who is just as surprised as I was....says he had no idea. Service guy at dealership where I bought it tried to convince me it was no big deal. Look at the bright side he said, you practically have a new car he said...no issues with value he said. Maybe he has a point. To my surprise someone else from the dealership calls and while he does not think it's a big deal and admits he had no idea, he offers to swap it for another car, or buy it back from me. That was awesome news. He tells me he has a similar car and will get back to me tomorrow on price. It sounds like they're going to make it right for me which is outstanding.
That said, I'm not sure what I should do or even want to do. Do I keep it and ask for an additional warranty and/or price discount. Do I swap it. Do I sell it back and look for something else?
Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Take their offer of a buyback. Plenty of these cars out there, don’t start with one that has problems straight out of the gate

I could care less about the engine replacement or mechanical repairs that have been fixed. My concern is the mismatched paint. Was it in an accident? How did they make that mistake? And how much will it cost to fix? You just paid 60-70k on a car, and its clearly not what you expected; you should get your moneys worth.
Walk away. You will never be able to sell this car for market value and this will drastically increase your cost of ownership. If these issues were not disclosed to you, then you have a cause to return it.
Did the CarFax report not show any of these details? Get their admission in WRITING ASAP & get your money back! If they left you a Voice Mail make certain you also get an eMail acknowledging that this is a non-disclosure issue on their side.
It sounds like you took a lot of time to find one with the "right" options. What are the odds that they will be able to find one with what you are seeking? I know they may have more eyes on the ground and more avenues to what's out there but how could you trust them after they tried to hide these details?

Engine blows up... owner dumps it... dealer hides fact engine blew up... alarm bells should be ringing.
Give it back and continue the search or see what kind of deal they can do on a NEW car. The dealership either wasn't thorough or they hoped no one would notice...lets hope it wasn't the later.
I think we have overwhelming concensus. The neglect leading to a blown engine obviously carried over to paint care and whi knows what else. Take the buyback and consider yourself lucky.
Yes.
