cal smog test
have a 2016 f type r with upper and lower pullies along with correct programs as per stuart any idea if it will pass smog in ca ?? plus alum induction pipes and cone air cleaners thanks in advance
I've inquired with VAP about ECU tuning multiple times in the past and they did not give a definitive answer. CA new smog program detects when an ECU has been tampered with even after being flashed back to OEM maps.
I see in your other post that you just had your car CA Smog tested.
Did you test it with the tune installed, or put the original tune back in for the test and did they question if you had a tune, since it does get flagged?
Did they question your Al. intake system or the pulleys?
No one has ever followed up on questions about their CA Smog test with a tune or what they had to do to pass it?
Thanks
Wayne B.

Just had my 2016 smogged for first time in 8 years in CA. I questioned the technician about engine modifications. He said in no uncertain terms that any modified car would not only fail but be blacklisted for life whether or not it was returned to the original configuration. This is only California. He said other states like Nevada don’t care what you do.

But SantaCruz11 says that his car has upper and lower pullies, tuned and has an aluminum intake and has apparently recently passed it's CA Smog test. He may be in a county with less strict requirement than the Bay Area but I wish he would tell us what he had to do to pass and if he was questioned at all about the tune or mods?
There has to be several other cars on this forum from CA that are tuned and have gone through the CA Smog test. We'd like to here how it went with your cars? So Far I do think anyone has really spoken up in detail.
I just recently passed the CA smog test with my 2016. I had Mina full kit and Vap Downpipes. I have a tune and pulleys ready to go on but was worried about smog so I waited. I went to a local smog n go shop first with everything just to see. Failed visual inspection for the air intake. Took just that off and brought it back. I reset the ecu due to the cel light on for O2 sensors on Vap DPs. Ran it through the whole test and it failed. Computer caught the cleared codes from the reset even though there was no cel Light. Went home changed the stock DPs back in, and drove to another smog location that helped me out quite a bit. They scanned the ecu first and said that the O2s were showing a fault. So I drove for around 60 miles and brought it back the next day. They did a quick scan with a handheld and it shows no faults. Hooked it up the machine and passed smog!!
I talked with Chris @ Vap and it sounds like you can drive on stock tune with the pulley upgrades, but you will have to remove DPs and intakes back to stock for sure. I don’t see anyone knowing that the pulleys are upgraded, but I will know for certain in 2 years when I go back to try with the pulley upgrades.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I think you are the first person to give us a detailed answer of what it took to get through a CA Smog check modded car and not even a tuned one yet. It will be interesting to see how the tuned cars with pullies will fair and if simply flashing the stock tune back in will do it?
Now if Santa Cruz11 would tell us how he got his car through the Smog check that would help too?
Thanks,
