Default Can anyone identify these cooling pipes?

Hi, everyone.

I have a 2015 F-Type R that I purchased pre-owned & I’ve been reading a bit about the Y Pipe issue many of these cars had.

Can anyone tell me if this looks like the old pipe, or is this the upgraded one? Thanks!

Those are very definitely the original leak-prone pipes, indicated by the flanges on the edges. The revised (but still plastic) pipes have no flanges, just a smooth rounded profile, as do the much better metal pipes, both those produced by Jaguar Land Rover and aftermarket sources.
It would be a good idea to plan on having the metal versions of these pipes installed. For the record, this issue is by no means restricted to Jaguars.

Thank you! I am guessing this is something that is most likely not covered under an extended warranty?

Pipes can be covered by certain extended warranties, depending on what you bought. They won't cover 'hoses' usually, but some companies do the hard pieces.

I have MaxCare through CarMax. Is this something I should get addressed right away? I just got the car serviced recently & they said everything under the hood appears to be in good shape. No coolant leaks or anything of that nature (knock on wood).

I doubt they'll replace them, even if covered, until they leak

And unless you keep a watchful eye on the coolant level, you COULD have a serious issue!

Any issue like that (or, a coolant trail flung up onto the underside of the hood/bonnet) indicates a leak.

A crack or seeping water pump are two common symptoms. Be alert to ward off a sudden loss.

If you're going to go to the trouble to replace them, get the metal pipes.

+1 on the great advice in the post above.

In addition to the water outlet pipes at the front of the engine, the heater pipe at the back of the engine between the cylinder heads is also a known failure point and should be replaced, preferably with the aluminium version.

The aftermarket also now supply an aluminium thermostat housing to eliminate another plastic cooling system part.

Here is what I did. These guys make a complete kit. Its not an easy job, but if you're somewhat mechanical, and with the help of this forum, you can do it. While you have your supercharger off, inspect it. My rotors had some wear on them so I sent it off and had it rebuilt with a new rotor pack and solid coupler.

If you have questions on the coolant upgrade kit, call them. They were very nice and seemed very knowledgable.

As posted above. Yes JLR will replace them under warranty IF they are leaking. Otherwise no. I had a WP and both front plastic pipes changed under warranty because of a leak on my 2014 XJR. I got the updated smooth seamed plastic pipes. No leaks on these after 40K+ miles BUT I do have a complete set of metal pipes I plan to install in the future.

But yes you have the worst of the bunch and get them swapped soon!
