CEL came on & there’s white smoke coming from the exhaust!! What’s the worst & best case scenario?

What DTCs are stored in the system?

Was the MIL flashing?

What conditions was the vehicle being operated under?

How many kilometres/miles on the vehicle?

Was any work recently been done to the engine?

OK best case it is condensation in the exhaust, doubt that would fire the CEL though. Bad fuel injector is likely next and that might trigger the CEL (fingers crossed but I doubt this is it). Water leakage into engine, most likely head gasket (where I'd put my money). Piston or valve seal leak, this is doubtful as well, but likely the most expensive of the bunch because it would probably mean pulling the engine. Obviously you need to get this into the shop ASAP. But they should be able to diagnose the problem pretty quickly. Were it my car I'd have it trailered in to be safe (you don't want to drive with ether of the last two problems.) Good luck and sorry this happened to you.

Thanks for your input. I explained the issue to a mechanic and he said as well that it sounds like head gasket. Expensive job?

Nothing was flashing. Normal driving. Miles-30K. No recent work.

Check fuel injectors first. A number of us on the X150 forum with the V8 have had these kinds of symptoms (me twice), and in each case a bad injector was the root cause. Mine started to stumble very badly (not driveable) put out tons of white smoke, and spit unspent fuel out the exhaust with a heavy scent of gasoline.

Put a code reader on it before you try anything else there is a good chance it has thrown a code or two even without a MIL/CEL.

its an injector sticking open...i just went through this. you will have a misfire CEL and a maybe some fuel rich related also. not the end of the world, but don't drive it, when its smoking like that its raw fuel washing one of the cylinders and will cause damage if you drive it long enough...its fine to start it and move it around but no road trips. PLUS its also somewhat dangerous as it will dump ALOT of fuel into your exhaust...and it may turn into a flame thrower like mine did the last time i started it. i did a write up on the whole procedure, takes about 4 hrs to do and about $600 in parts and tools.

first thing is determine what side is running super rich. you will see fuel trims on the effected side in the -30s on the long term trims. you will need at a min a Bluetooth obd2 adapter and the free app called torque if you dont have a scanner with live data.

the dealer will get you 2-3k to do one bank of injectors (dealer will only do all 4 one side at a time).

Not the end of the world but a legit problem with our AJ motors (and any GDI injection motor really) the high side fuel system is very finicky and is the weakest link.

Good Luck!

Any chance you could modify the thread subject to make it a bit more descriptive? "Dilemma" could be anything!

I likely can do this, what would you like the new thread title to be?

Does the exhaust smell sweet like coolant burning? Because it threw a cel, I'm leaning towards bad injector stuck open.

Kinda verifies that the likely cause is a fuel injector. (See post 6)

Yeah I'm certain it's a leaking injector now.
