Default Considering Jag for the first time

I've just started to think about buying a new car, and remember loving the F-Type just from ads I saw last year. However, Jags had a not-so-impressive reputation for the amount of time they spent in the shop, at least among the people I knew who owned them 30 years ago.

The F-Type is probably too new to have much of a service/dependability record, but has Jaguar generally made strides in keeping cars on the road more than in the shop?

Welcome to the forum. Go 49ers!

I'm an owner and not affiliated with Jag.

Jaguar is a totally different company today. I wouldn't have considered a Jaguar 3 years ago, or even last year.
Ownership has changed, management is different, strategy is different, manufacturing process is different, marketing execution and product design are obviously different too.

Here are some recent JD Power results for new vehicle satisfaction, and initial quality (IQS). Jaguar ranks near the top on each. For the vaunted JD Power vehicle dependability study (VDS), the company has made dramatic improvements but IQS is a better leading indicator because the VDS tests 3-year old cars so there is a lag effect as the brand improves.

One telling statistic is, 80% of F-TYPE owners are new to the Jaguar brand. That is an impressive statistic as Jaguar had previously been facing an acute issue with ageing ownership demographics. But just as important, it means the vehicle satisfaction surveys are less biased by longtime enthusiasts.

Company has broken something like 35 sales records worldwide, and is the fastest growing luxury brand today (although recently may have ceded to Tesla).
If you're interested in reading more about the turnaround in the brand, i can't recommend this book enough:

+1 and welcome to the forum.

I had also NEVER considered a Jaguar until the F-Type, other than lusting over a teacher's '65 E-Type as a teenager, but it grabbed my attention as well when it debuted. After some research, which showed essentially what Schraderade describes above, I drove all variants, and it was all over.

My car has been flawless since delivery 7 months ago, and I drive it about 50 miles at least almost every day. My experience has my wife now lusting after the soon to arrive XE. The 80% first time JLR buyers attracted by the F-Type will sell many other JLR models in the years to come if their reputation continues to rise at the current rate.

Default Great info

Thanks for the useful info, guys. I wasn't prepared to even take a test drive - for fear I'd do something stupid like buy the car - if the quality hadn't taken a sharp turn for the better.

For the most part, I seriously doubt anyone here would disagree with the following:

One test drive is all it will take for you to lust after this automobile.

Separately, it's safe to say this isn't your father's Jaguar, paraphrasing another marques tag line.

Foosh, you are correct, I also have had mine about 7 months. No problems, just a beautiful well built machine.

Jaguar really are on the up, in more ways than one, it's a brand really on the rise and they do aim to be number one.

Jaguar monitor and are working very closely with this forum and presumably others too.

We currently have a Customer care representative on site daily ( albeit for the UK )

We have high hopes that there may be a US / Canadian rep onboard too at some point.

Service & reliability are improved, advertising is through the roof and jag's can be seen in many new movies, really pushing the brand.

My FtypeR is my third Jaguar.. first XJR, then XKR and how the F.. all flawless and great to drive in there own right.
My local dealer is excellent (can't speak for others) and I have written to Jaguar Customer service with suggestions and got a quick and intelligent response ... although I'm sure some things can and do 'fall off the rails', as with any large company.
Lawrence.

Lawrence, where did you buy and from who? Living in TO, there are about 5 dealerships to choose from, but none are close to me.

Thanks, John

I would actually say that the last 5 years have changed Jag a great deal. This is my 4th consecutive Jag and not one has had any issues. Some minor things like trim not fitting but I had that with Mercs, Alfas etc. Looking back, these cars have been the least hassle of any owned.

I bought from Metro West Jaguar.. Domenic Bertucci..

They know the cars as they have sold them for years; earlier dealer name was Roberts Motors.

They assign the same mechanic to me each time I'm in and he comes over to talk to me concerning what service he performed.. in my case usually just oil, but I have asked for a few adjustments over the past years.. ie: radio etc..

Every owner that I've seen come in are greeted by name... they come and pick up my car for service and return it, if I wish, no charge.

Lawrence

Thumbs up

Welcome to the OP...

I never ever would have considered a Jaguar until I saw an ad for the F-Type and fell in love...sexist car on the planet and one test drive will show you what a balanced driver's car this is.

Trust me,your life will change as an F-type owner...this car really does make you feel alive.

OP - I never thought I'd own a Jaguar and always thought of it as an "old guy's" brand and had concerns about the reliability. Anyway, when I canceled my order for a Viper in 2013 I thought I wanted a 911 so I went to the dealership and drove one - it was emotionless and did nothing for me, so I did more research and saw that the F-Type was pretty damned cool and Jag's quality was much improved. Turns out the Porsche dealer is also a Jaguar dealer, so I went back and drove the F-Type V8S and was hooked. I ordered my car about a week later and the rest, as they say, is history. It's been a great car thus far - it's pretty quick (not Viper quick, but quick) and I've not had a single problem with it.

I always thought Jags were nice classy cars & never saw myself owning one, but once i saw the CX16 concept a couple of years ago I fell in lust! I followed it until I read they were going forward with it . I knew I had to have one. The F-Type Coupe looks almost identical to the concept. Imho, it is one of the most (if not the) sexiest cars on the planet.

andybe,

I live in your neighborhood (go Cardinal) and recently switched from a 996-era 911 turbo coupe to a F-Type R coupe . I'm a brit so I was well aware of the old "buy two jags" adage (one to drive while the other's getting fixed). Although I was completely sold by the looks, sound and driveability of the car I still went and talked to some of the original f-type owners.
You are always going to find some niggles and this forum will highlight these well. That said, I'm real happy with my decision. I looked at a new Porsche and a Maserati but the jag has an allure of its own. Go drive one and you'll see!

I went to the San Francisco Auto Show last weekend and everything seemed unexciting to me compared to the Jaguar/Land Rover lineup. I’ve always been a BMW guy but got bored. The F-Type solved that problem during the first test drive. So far it has been an exceptional car with no issues and brings smiles every time I drive it. Jaguar has a very bright future if they continue to offer cars as good as the F-Type.

Default i'm like the OP - thanks for the helpful info!

Thank you all for this input, I am new to this forum but have been trying to research the F Type (R mostly) because it's so beautiful. I have a newer model Lotus Evora and have a Z06 on order (but i'm about to cancel that order) and i've place my Evora up for sale because i anticipate that i'll be buying the F type soon if i continue to read more and more wonderful things about them. I want to read any and all issues (if any) that people have had....the closest dealer for me is Birmingham AL (3 hrs away) in the next couple of months, i'll hope to find a nice R... i look forward to learning from you all as i have never had a Jag (i'm a die hard vette girl) but the look of this baby has me totally in love....or lust rather...heheh

OP i'm not trying to hijack your post, i'm just agreeing with you and am anxious to learn more..

My father had 2 jags without problems and I've had my v8s since March, 18000km so far, and no major issues. While the ftype is very well built I have to say that Porsche, Mercedes and Audi are all slightly better. But to be honest you won't care.

As soon as I first saw the rising center vent I said well that's asking for trouble. I was right, on mine that's been the only problem. After about 6,000km it started rattling a bit when it was open so they replaced the mechanism, that fixed it for 12,000km but now it's starting to rattle slightly again. I feel this will be a reoccurring problem. That being said Montreal has horribly rough streets so id expect that has played a role in accelerating issues like this.

At the end of the day every car will have problems no matter what manufacturer.

RavenRed,

As a former Z06 owner and Lotus owner (Elise), I seriously doubt you'd regret going with the F-Type on any level. If you test drive it, you'll almost certainly buy it.

As I said above in a previous post above, I've had zero service issues.
