Default Difficulty on removing cat downpipes?

I'm looking to replace the Bank 1 passenger cat downpipe specifically. The P0420 code is constantly getting stored; at this point I'm moving past O2 sensors, as it makes no sense that the same code is stored time and time again if the O2 sensor is bad, and I'm going to replace the cat for safe measure, assuming the O2 sensors are doing their job and the bank 1 cat is in fact bad. How difficult is it to remove/replace? I can't find any DIY on it, and fingers crossed I don't have to dig deep into the engine bay to reach some odd bolt or something to that extent.

It’s not easy. I attempted it without a lift and didn’t have the required tools or technique as the bolts were seized into place due to heat cycles. My dealer whom I’m very friendly with all the service staff said it’s a Bitch!
Glad I didn’t waste much time

I've checked the diagrams of the S and the R...the downpipes are not that much different, other than the cat rating maybe, and whether it's AWD. Either way, mine is barely 13k, so here's to hoping I don't run into seized bolts (I've seen it before with older cars, and yes it sucks). Also fingers crossed this will solve the P0420 code I'm still getting.

EDIT: Just to be safe, I ordered the bolts too. I didn't see any exhaust flange gasket being required though...

I thought about it, but saw some videos and didn't like how it altered the OEM sound. I'm pretty keen on sticking with the OEM stuff.

Aren’t those cats covered under the 100k emissions warranty?

Never mind! The feds cut that back to 24k. My 2002 MINI emission system was covered for 100k.

You need NEW studs and bolts (2 of each) the flange comes with the down pipe. You also should buy a new clamp to secure the downpipe to centre section. Re-using the existing one might not seal properly. Have a grinder with you because the OEM centre section clamps are Tack welded on. Good luck! You need stubby short key to reach the top bolt or a crow foot key in half inch so then you can get a half inch extension on there about 14 inch long with a breaker bar. That's my take! IF you dont have those tools dont waste your time. The dealer will charge max 2 hours to get that done! Is $250 worth the headach of DIY?

Regardless, I flashed a new VAP map, so chances are they'll grief me over it.

Anyway, I'm going to try replacing the downstream O2 sensor first. Seems like sourcing a new OEM cat isn't all that easy.

Google T2R17114. You'll find them available for about $1000 plus shipping. If you have the time, you can ship the OEM unit to Davico Mfg. and they will replace the catalyst for under $200 (plus 2-way shipping). You can go through RockAuto.com to do this for you.

That you do, hoist is best, wobly extension, also can work from top with a modified spanner.
Has any group offered replacement pipes to remove the Cats. Need a replacement electrical fitting to trick the computer.
Used on Harleys when Std pipes are removed.
