I have a 2018 4 Banger F type convertible. No apologies to the V8 powered owners. In the past I've stored electronic keys in the car while it is parked in my garage. The car is driven several times a week. Will this work with the Jag?

 

There were rumors in the past about maybe the car not sleeping properly if the key is left in it. Why not try it - would give us a useful data point!

And congrats on the new car - if you're happy, we're happy.

 

If you mean storing the key fob in the car, I don't believe the car will lock. It didn't when I had my XF; imagine f type is the same, although it hasn't been tried yet ( or forgotten in the car I should say.)

 

From my reading of the OP's starting post he is not even attempting to lock the car, he is simply leaving it unlocked with the fob inside the car in his (locked) garage.
IMHO this is a recipe for disaster and odds on the battery will die much quicker than if the car was locked and the fob was stored elsewhere.

 

I haven't tried that. Mine sleeps outside. I know it will refuse to lock if the fob is inside.

 

Also, the rear hatch refuses to latch if you leave the key in the trunk.

 

When I took delivery way back in '14 the dealer told me not to leave the key in car, they found out the hard way with dead batteries!

 

In addition to the points already raised, it seems rather risky leaving the key in the car, even if you believe your garage is secure.

In the unfortunate case of your car being stolen your insurer may require knowledge of how the car was driven away, disclosure of the fact that you kept the key in the car may lead to a suggestion of "contributory negligence" which may lead to reduced or zero pay out of the insurance claim

 

I have found in the past 10 years that the car talks to these keys, if they are within range. I cannot even use a key rack inside my back door, anymore. If you drive every day, this is not a problem, but it will affect the battery over a longer term.

only time my battery has ever died i left my fob in the cup holder for 2 week while out of town on vacation. came back no start, never had the problem again after reading about the car using power if keys are close enough to talk to the car. i think alot of the battery problems i have read about are related to the car not going to "sleep" because keys are within range, like stated above even if its in on the hook inside.
