Hey all, adding to the statistics. I have a 2015 R (RWD) with 47k miles. Bought the car in July and didn't notice any leak, but I believe it started leaking in October. Took the car to local JLR dealer to have the fluid changed ahead of a trip to Tail of the Dragon and they found the pinion seal leak. I had an indy shop replace the seal, but afterwards it had notable bearing noise. That, and the seal started leaking again. They've ordered a used e-diff out of a 2017 SVR to replace it. 1yr/12k mile coverage on parts and labor. Wish me luck!

After all of the comments on this thread it definitely seems like the pinion seal/diff has a design issue if they fail this frequently, especially with so few miles. My plan going forward is to have the diff oil changed every 1yr/10k miles and to have the breather valve checked each time for cleanliness. Frankly though, I'm kindof afraid I'm going to run into this problem again with the used diff =/

Had my rear diff go bad at ~35,000 miles. 2017 R AWD. Thankfully it was covered under warranty.

2016 S AWD.
DId fluid at 52k for rear. No issues.

Did tranny, tranfer, and front diff at 54k. No issues.

Used fit for purpose fluids from Ravenol - all synthetic. Plan to do rear diff at 30k intervals and the others at about 60k....since the rear gets the most torque. No noise in and no noise out so far at about 1500 miles since the last bit.

It is all we seem to be able to do about this - up the maintenance schedule - so that is the plan here. I also always let the car warm up before driving hard on it...the gauge on the dash is coolant and sort of useless so I just drive 5min or so before pushing it. ....leave it in auto normal "D".........

wait a tic...

I have been sucked into this thread, and find it .... curiously appalling.

Less than 20k miles on a rear diff !!??
Ok, Ok, I get the oil leak issue.... no oil = rapid degradation.
But the oil contamination or rapid breakdown? must come from something!

The Open diff in the base model = simple, nothing going wrong in there, no friction modifiers in the oil... plane Jane problem... should last a lifetime. (my base mode V6 rear diff has no issues)

The LSD (V6S) and eLSD (V8+) seem to have lubrication issues... as they have clutches or friction surfaces.
Could it be the Dynamic Control System (DCS) which pumps the brakes and throttle when power delivery gets squirrelly?
Think of it... every time the driver hits the traction limit, the e/LDS fights the mechanical brakes and throttle.

Sounds like a perfect storm for highly accelerated wear.

Lesson learned: turn DCS off, or at least go to TracDCS for some rear diff relief.

thoughts?

There have been oil leaks documented on quite a few, but worryingly it appears that cars are losing their diffs, evident by strange noises from the rear, at anywhere from 25 ~50k miles.

I'm in the process of collating info (as I did quite a few years ago regarding underbody brace corrosion that got accepted by Jag UK as a build issue) and need help from guys over your side of the pond and beyond.

I'm yet to find any explanations from dealers regarding why the diffs fail, after all they just swap out the whole unit as opposed to diagnose and fix them, but I'd put money o it being oil contamination, and early break down of the lubricating properties perhaps?

So anyone that's had issues, I'd be glad to hear from you, as I would any diagnosis of why failure occurred.
Be good to know which diff/car model and mileage covered too.

TIA
2016 f type R whining noise in rear. Replaced Entire rear diff under CPO warranty at roughly 30k miles

currently
56k miles charged me $900+ to repair another rear diff leak again. Looks like they sprayed some kind of metallic sealant over the gasket that’s in the middle of the 2 piece shell. Dlr tells me that this is not the same problem as prior (which is BS)

called back days later still leaking. Cars been at dealership now over 2 weeks. States diff is leaking but rather than replace the diff like JLR recommends for $3200+ they want to replace the gasket seal and charge me another $300.

guarantee that my diff fails now I near future. They’ll end up over or under torquing when closing the diff case and it’ll cause problems with the gears of the diff causing the teeth to break off. Already know it….

asked them if there was an upgraded diff I could have them replace it with but they just keep using the same defective diff. So expect to have diff issues every 30k miles or so….

also, read before that there was some sort of lawsuit settlement between jaguar and the contracted supplier for either the diff or the oil used where JLR won big $$$. Looks like JLR pocketed the money except for warrantied diff replacements, rather than remedy the problem with its buyers. Surprising???I think not.

I have a 2021 with 16+k. I kept hearing a clunk from time to time out of the right rear. I took it in to the local dealership and they replaced the differential. They said they had only seen one other that had this issue. I asked how much. They said, without the warrantee about 9-10K.. Happy for the warrantee!

My notes gleaned over the years say:

"If you’re considering replacing the Pinion Seal yourself there's a few things
you should know beforehand.

Apparently you can totally destroy the diff if you fit a new seal without torqueing it the right way.

Also, a Jaguar Technician says......'I have replaced a few pinion seals, but follow the book on it or it will lead to more issues. You just have to mark the shaft, nut and part that the drive shaft bolts to it. Use a dial caliper and measure the threads.'
"
End quote.

Good discussion, here are my thoughts after taking apart 6 rear differentials from various F-Type and XE vehicles.

There are stories of forum members experiencing various noises from the rear diffs.
Whining Noise: @bostonian F-Type R
Whining noises while driving straight would indicate a consistent gear mesh issue between the pinion gear and the ring gear. This could indicate old oil or lack of appropriate lubrication, improper backlash and preload on the bearings internal to the diff.
Whining noises while making corners would indicate a differential gear mesh issue between the planet and sun gears, or an issue with the friction discs in the V6 S model LSD. The LSD cars certainly benefit from more frequent oil changes, of the correct type. (Castrol BOT 720) @jcb-memphis
Clunk Noise: @themacs001 2021 with 16kmi
A clunk from a rear diff would indicate poor oil, or no oil to soften the gear engagement in the center carrier, but could also be poor axle half-shaft engagement into the rear diff.
Or the e-Diff engagement mechanism could be the issue for clunk noises on V8 cars.
Replacing Pinion Seal: @scm
Yes, this is a big job. I have done this on one of my rear diffs (3.15 ratio, from base V6, 40kmiles). The seal needs replacing, the yoke to pinion shaft interface needs refresh, the crush washer which separates the two bearing races is hard to replace/find/source. The amount of torque needed to crush the crush-washer is up around 400 ft-lbs and requires a very long extension on your wrench.
The pre-load on the pinion bearings (one is a dual ball bearing, the other is a roller bearing) is critical and difficult to achieve with the unit still in the car. (Jaguar method) I have a means now of getting this right.

The Jaguar rear diffs are based upon the DANA 44 AdvanTEK gear set, which has a 220 mm OD Ring Gear. Each gear ratio has a unique pairing of Pinion and Ring gear. These were specially developed to be quiet, efficient and long life. But I think more pressure and shear force is applied to the oil, hence Jag has specified special diff oil for these units. (BOT 750B, or BOT 720)
Jaguar designed the aluminum housing and cover to fit a range of their cars. The cover-to-housing is sealed with a grey RTV and, yes, this can leak. It is a total pain to remove from the car and repair, so best to inspect this interface before returning to service.

I will soon be offering a rebuild service for these rear differentials. I am also looking at the V8 e-Diff units to see if they can also benefit from a rebuild service. This will result in less expensive replacement options for those with Jaguars that are out of warrantee.
