Default Fog lights on?

Just driven down to Cornwall for a week's holiday...Wonderful drive and left 4am to avoid the traffic....great idea, well worth it. However, at that time of day there's quite a lot of early morning mist and fog. This was the first time Id ever needed to use the fog lights and. Obviousely didn't have a clue where they where. Found them (I think) at bottom rhs of steering wheel (left I guess in the states). Pressed button and..bingo...a warning light appeared in the instrument binnacle. Success, I could relax. Soon enough the fog cleared and I turned off the switch. A few miles ahead it came back, even thicker this time...went to press the fog light button again but this time to warning light appeared on the screen. No matter how many times, how hard or how Long I pressed I couldn't get any indication that they were working. I assumed maybe a fuse or something had blown after its first use. Anyone else experienced this?. In the end the mist all cleared and had a wonderful drive. I oive this car 😊

Here's some pics after a recent well deserved hand wash.

I believe the fog light switch is to brighten the rear lights so you do not get rear ended..

Just looked at the manual, yes that is the switch, it is for rear only. They will only work if other lights turned on so that might be why you couldn't turn them on again if your main lights were off.

Correct. Rear fogs only work when parking and/or headlights are on. It sounds like OP had headlights set to auto, and they had shut down.

In the UK and some places, the fogs are a separate set of lights next to the back-up lights. In the US, the fog bulb is in the same housing as the back-up lights on the rear diffuser.

Ah ok, great thanks for that....Yes headlamps were set to Auto....as the morning wore on I guess the ambient light had increased to the point that headlamps weren't required! Having said that I could barely see the car in front. However, now I know...turn headlamps to manual in foggy conditions. Thanks everyone. Great forum.
