Gray smoke, machine gun exhaust, burning smell on second day of ownership
Vbgeek,
Your experience mimics what has now happened three times to my 5.0L XKR in the last six months. Very rough idle begins, then smell of fuel, tons of grey smoke coming from unburnt fuel in the exhaust, and finally shut down. Each of the first two times, reprogramming of the ECU fixed the problem as if nothing had happened and nothing else was done. This past Sunday, it began to happen again while I was on the freeway. I did not want to get stuck on the freeway, so I pulled off at the next exit, and while going down the exit the restricted performance light as well as the CEL warning both disappeared (they had both come on when on the freeway), and the car began running properly again. I drove it home and drove it back to my mechanic, yesterday morning without any issues. But, I don't want it to happen again, so we are probably going to change ECU units since no one can figure how it was able to lose the program twice before, and since I'm having some other work done that I have put off for a while, I just wanted to take care pre-emptively.
Good luck.

This "punch code" is when the dealer officially removed it from inventory. Sometimes dealerships do this to help them meet sales targets when they are short a sale or two. Technically, this means that the car is being placed into service even though they have not yet sold it to an individual yet. It is always important to know if the "new" car you are buying is truly "new" or if it's service record has already been "punched".
We should all check this stuff before buying used!
I just got the message that my new transmission is done already! Call me cynical, but I thought I'd be waiting a long long time. So far Jag service and communications have been perfect.
Super excited to go pick it up tomorrow
Just an FYI, when punched and not yet sold to a retail customer, cars are also sold as new. Mine had 76 miles and no previous owner. When done, there is typically an incentive discount that can or partially can, but is not always passed on to the prospective owner to sell the car.

Congrats! It was a good day for both of us. Enjoy!
Got the car back, ran great since last week, then today the same damn problem happened on the interstate. Gas smell, exhaust noise, sluggish. Pulled off and it jumped and raged in idle and smoke came out the back.
So yet again, roadside to the dealership where I have to wait all weekend to hear about it.
I’ve owned this car for 16 days and a thousand miles and at this point I just wish I could return it.

We all empathize with you. Best of luck.Makes one wonder whether it was a chronic problem for the previous owner. If it’s a problem with the same injector, it could be an intermittent short in the wiring to that injector.
