Faint 'machine gun' sound from my 2001 2.5 V6

It only happens when accelerating and it is really worrying me. It is a faint 'tatata' sound. Wonder whether it's damaging or whether it is some noise retaining plate, timing belt, transmission, exhaust?????? Please help I'm shitting bricks and cant' get it to the garage until Monday.
Doesn't happen in all gears in 1st and 5th its fine. Just in 2-4, it sounds like a mechanical sound, imagine the normal engine noise and a faint 'ratataratata'. Then after a while the noise goes away or maybe I just get used to it.

Can the car still rev all the way up the rev line? Can it easily get to 6000rpm or have you lost some power? Might be a million things. Anything from bent rods to bent valves to a transmission problem. You have to be more descriptive. Where is the sound coming from? A small video clip maybe?

The car can rev perfectly. There is no vibration from the clutch or gear stick. The sound is coming from the front, can't be more specific. It does not do it it at idle or when revving in neutral. I have no leaks and I will check under the car tomorrow with a fine tooth comb.
The car I bought has done 80k miles and has a full service histoy except. the 70k, so on Monday I will take it to Jaguar and ask them to do the exact service it should have had at 70k. I took two mechanics with me when I bought it and they found nothing at all.

If it doesn't do it in neutral then I'd pin-point at the tranny obviously. Do this: Put it in second with the clutch disengaged and rev it. If it doesn't knock, then the problem might be with the pressure plate. A bit more specifically, does it do it a specific speed? If you get a little vibration as well, then it might be a misaligned drive-shaft. Common problem with the X-type. I give you this link, and I had to travel all the way back to April to find this. LOL! You have 28 pages to find problems similar to yours
. As you can see, it's a highly covered issue.
