As the title states, one of my dear friends found a 2016 V6S, with a little over 22,000 on the ODO, on Carvana last Friday, and is in the process of buying it. (I did a quick word search here using Carvana and nothing popped up. Hence my post).
I also did a little research on Carvana with several websites listing the Pros and Cons. Based on my cursory research, and where my friend and I live, while Carvana gives you a 7-day trial whether to keep the car or not (and another friend informed us that is 7-days or a certain number of miles, whichever comes first) we have to drive 3 or so hours to go get it. We are doing just that this Friday.
Any advice 1) [re] a Carvana purchase and 2) anything specific you think I need to look at for while we hang around checking, and driving, the car over? Our good friend @DJS already suggested to me to make sure the key fobs have the actual key in them and he noticed that the wheels had a locking lug nut on them (yes, it would be nice--to say the least--to have that key!).
Any thoughts appreciated.
Best regards,
Jay

May want to check battery situation, as when they go out they can cause all sorts of drama with the cars electrical systems.
Pop the hood and verify if the coolant lines are the old plastic style from the factory, or upgraded plastic or aluminum versions (if not and he plans to actually drive this, he may want to squirrel away some monies for some future maintenance.
As the age of the car is the same as mine give or take I can tell you the following is pretty much (due to age/mileage) do or should be done since the tech will be elbow deep in the motor anyways;
Due
-S/C Belts
-Accessory Belts
-Plugs
-S/C Oil
Consider preventative maintenance while doing the above;
-Change S/C Snout
-Clean Valves
-Transmission flush/service
-Change coolant lines to aluminum or upgraded plastic versions
I personally had all the above done recently, the Fype is my daily and i beat on it. Hasn't skipped a beat...knock on wood.
Check for owner's manual in the glove box and tow hook and tow hook holder in the trunk. All those items tend to go missing. If missing try to get some compensation.
Make sure the center vent operates smoothly and without gear grinding.
check all the weather stripping for rip or tears, doors, trunk, bonnet.
Check headlight lenses for microcracking
Do all the switches and controls work. Fob works to lock and unlock.
Backup camera?
Spoiler raises at 70, lowers at 50.
Condition of wheels, rims.
Tire wear.
Cruise control operational.
Pad wear on brakes.
Service history.
Carfax available?
No codes
Oil level at OK.
Check the underside of the car if possible
infotainment system operational, nav, satellite, am -fm, steering wheel controls work on that system, volume, etc.
window/windshield glass free of scratches.
Three thoughts in addition to all the previous good advice. Turn the A/C to full cold and see what comes out of the vents. Second, if you have a good mechanic, consider a Pre Purchase Inspection. My mechanic charged an hour labor-worth every penny in peace of mind. Also have a close look at the paint in various lighting conditions. Swirl marks from automated car washes can be difficult to see. I rejected an F-type from Carvana for just that. Good luck!
All solid advice, thank you all. As the owner of my soon-to-be 11-year old V6S I am reasonably familiar with much which has been written here—and I will attempt to gently temper both our excitement from neglecting much of what has been written here (although I cannot promise that).
A forum like this—especially this one—is a wellspring of [valuable] information and proof that not everything on the internet is..well..crap.🙏
@lizzardo I did e-mail you the link to the car, thank you for looking it over. I am encouraged that the car has a little over 22,000 miles (which doesn’t mean everything is OK) and under “condition” on the Carvana website it only shows 4, let’s call them, imperfections. I would hope that if it had any wheel rash, for example, it would list that (?). We shall see soon enough.
I will certainly post a follow-up after our pick up.
I purchased my 2016 convertible from carvana in December of last year. Below is a summary of the post purchase warranty that you will get. The car arrived in great shape but I could see that the rotors were worn and brakes were needed. So I filed a claim with silverock and they had me take it to their authorized service center which was my local Firestone dealer and they confirmed the brakes are needed but could not perform the service because it's a jaguar.
My local repair shop who I've worked with for the past 20 years was able to get a claim approved for over $2,500 to have all rotors and brake pads replaced.
After my research finding out about needing to replace the supercharger coupler and update all of the cooling hoses in the engine, I took my car to local jlr dealer who is able to get approval with silver rock to replace these, and they covered 4,500 worth of repairs. I had to pay a $100 deductible. Note that silver Rock will consider this to be a specialty car which allows you to take it to the jlr dealer rather than having to use their authorized service center which is usually going to be a cheapo Firestone dealer in the area.
So my advice is that once you take delivery of the car, get it inspected immediately for any repairs that need to be done within that 100 day warranty period. Working with silver rock was not very difficult as their automated system utilizes email as well as txt phone messaging.
When you purchase a car from Carvana, you receive a complimentary limited warranty that covers your vehicle for 100 days or 4,189 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty provides protection against most major mechanical and electrical failures, including:
Engine Transmission Suspension A/C & Heating Steering And more
The warranty also includes 24/7 roadside assistance and rental car coverage.
How the warranty process works: If you need repairs, you can find an in-network shop through Carvana’s “My Cars” page. The repair shop calls SilverRock (the warranty administrator) to start a claim. Covered repairs are approved and paid directly by SilverRock.
@RickyJay52 I replied to your email with a couple of notes based on the specific listing. Separately, I agree that the mileage is a good sign. It's enough to have shaken out initial issues (and get the tires replaced) but not so much that additional worries would arise.
The specs say it has a "limited use spare" but I really doubt it does. It's probably the pump and bottle of goo.
I've never used the CD/DVD player in mine but if it's important to your friend be sure to test it out: likewise the USB ports. If someone was rough with those they might have issues. See that the charging one charges and the other can be read. I use mine *all* the time with a low-profile USB stick with a few thousand songs on "shuffle everything" mode. If you've got one handy throw some music on it to test.
I'm sure you know how these feel, and that when you drive it you'd notice anything unusual. Overall, it looks like a nice car.
All good advice above. I wouldn't worry too much about the battery; comments about the PIA factor of a failed battery are valid, but it's not that big a deal. Check the date code and figure to replace it before it becomes a problem.
graybeardnw's input on buying from Carvana and their warranty are great inputs. I'd just make one edit - where he says "once you take delivery of the car, get it inspected immediately," make that "BEFORE you take delivery, get it inspected." I always worry a bit about the history of a car that lands at Carvana or Carmax.
I don't think anyone mentioned it, but presumably you have a Carfax. See where the car was last registered/used and check with the local JLR dealer for maintenance insights.
Past all that, I can only add to check for sticky buttons. Not a show stopper, but a pain.
Look under the front of the car at the plastic spoiler under the splitter. I'm nt sure why I started noticing, but I have seen a number of used ones where it is gone or damaged. This can have an effect on the entire under tray.
Also, the Carfax will list most of the service records. I had to call the 3 JLR dealers listed to learn when the air filters were last changed since that was not on the document
Carvana has many open lawsuits for selling cars and never providing titles. Some cars have been found to be stolen. I would steer clear personally of Carvana.
I do not put a lot of stock in Carfax reports. They are better than nothing though I guess. Case in point I traded in a car last year. The rear quarter panel had been replaced. The work was done at a repair shop authorized by the manufacturer. It was well over $10K in repairs. When I traded it in the dealer ran the Carfax report and showed me. There was nothing on the report about that repair.
I also had a friend who was trading in a car that he bought new. Dealers were giving him all kinds of really low trade in value on it. He finally asked why. The Carfax report was showing the car was in an accident with significant damage. It never was.
My friend and I picked up his new-to-him stunning 2016 V6S F-Type yesterday, Carvana in Norfolk, MA, and it was in even better condition that we had anticipated. Among other things, and after an exhaustive review of the listing and the accompanying CarFax the night before (and thanks to this Forum!) we looked for the 4 “body/paint imperfections” described. Try as we might we absolutely could not find them. One of my “car expert” friends—who has purchased 4 cars from Carvana—thinks that they fixed them. No matter, it was a very pleasant surprise.
We surprised @DJS on our way back home and borrowed his “front plate for inspection” solution (not the Sto N Sho) and then made pit stops at our friends at Auto Innovations in Scarborough, Maine (my friend will likely have some PPF work done) and then another quick stop at Land Rover, Scarborough where we’ll have an inspection done next week. Along with new tires installed. It came with Pirelli P-Zero’s—which were in fine shape—but I don’t have to explain here what that means.
Here are just a few pics of my friends beautiful car. 1) I would have taken a photo of DJS’s beautiful 2014 vert with ours but his car was so shockingly dirty I would not want to embarrass him (although I just have). I’ve just informed @Nati about our friends purchase and he is already suggesting I host a “Non-Event Event” and to “put up the Bat signal”. Stay tuned….you never know.
Thank you again all!
Jay
P.S. As I state, the car was in splendid condition—no sticky buttons!—and the “only” question mark, which wasn’t a deal breaker, was that the leather headliner, on both the driver’s side as well as the passenger side, was just a little loose/lumpy. We thought that a bit odd but as that was the only thing which stuck out to us…
…well, on the drive home, as we were driving in tandem, I happened to notice and feel my headliner, on both sides, and sure enough, so are mine! I’m assuming others in our MY range might have the same “issue”?

Maybe some corrective phrenology is in order? Jay's head may be bumpy and loose, but it's mostly screwed on right.
A linguistic expert can have a field day with that second sentence Steve. I nominate you and “the other Steve @scm across the pond”. I’ve found “both Steves’” to be unalterably accurate, thoughtful, tasteful and, always, grammatically spot on. @DJS on the other hand, I nominate to have the dirtiest F-Type on this or any forum. That is unless he did wash it after all and after shaming him into doing so.
In the meantime, let’s salute my buddy and his gorgeous 2016 VS6—he’s been, and now is, a devout F-Type obsessed nut; our kind of guy.
