I am not good at physics, and I've only driven trucks with a high center of gravity, where you are considering clearances and angles where the car might flip if you hit the turn, curve, terrain wrong. Well... not in the F-Type.

I haven't aggressively tracked (done Sonoma a few laps), nor done autocross, so I am not familiar what it would be like to get this thing onto 3 wheels, let alone 2. It means I don't really know the tolerances or limitations of the car, and as heavy as it is.... what would it take to flip this car over? I am not wanting to do it, but would love to have a better feel for speeds and turns that would reach the outer limits of keeping this thing on the ground.

I am sure it's an absurd question, but totally curious. We don't even have to do the calculations on the back of a napkin.... but has anyone really come very close to reaching the threshold of where this car is airborne or potentially flipping?

I assume this thread will die quickly and painlessly, so no worries if this is super dumb. =)

 

Center of gravity is fairly low, so you will probably have to hit something while sliding sideways to flip F-type.

Agreed. Also the car is very wide - a fair bit wider than a 911 and not much narrower than a Huracan - so it'd take a lot of tipping.

 

A 90-degree slide off the pavement @ 50MPH onto an un-paved shoulder would probably be enough to "flip" ANYTHING short of a formal race car and even then... possibly.

I remember reading an article when the remake of Casino Royal got made several years ago. Now that was an Aston Martin but the sides and low centre of gravity are likely very similar. They were filming over and over the scene where Daniel Craig has to avoid hitting Eva Green and stunt driver just could not get the car to roll over. They even tried a ramp. Ultimate they had to rig a hydraulic piston to fire off at the right time to get the car to flip. I suspect the FTYPE is also that tough to roll without a lot of external help.

 

I suppose I am in the minority here, but I believe any car is very easy to roll.

 

I think I saw some video clips of that stunt as well. We might try to recreate that stunt during the 2018 Jaguar Wild Blueberry Blast this August.

Car Flipping 101

 

Unconsciously, I'm sure that Bon scene left some residual apprehensions. What a spectacular flip and crash.

However, I forgot about a few instances of the car rolling.

Considering that each of those four had the combination of dumbass drivers and uncommon situational events, I would not use those four videos as evidence of ANY car being "easy" to roll. Add in the high center of gravity for a few of them...

None of those four scenarios really ever present themselves to a driver of a performance car that knows what they are doing behind the wheel.

 

 

This one was more "over-easy" than the eggs I had at breakfast this morning...

 

Interesting how easily it lost that wheel.


Maybe the incident was caused by a set of loose lug nuts on the wheel rather than just one loose lug nut behind the wheel.

 

It takes one person to flip the car and 14 fireman to flip it back over (If it's a gallardo, anyway).

Sparky Fuze, your videos truly freaked me out ... I am going to be terrified to drive! Seriously. Also, the second one (Honda Civic) is disturbing as nobody seems to care about the car flipping over and all continue driving around or walking across the street... Amazing.
