Default Just read this.

Hi first post, I'm from Bristol UK and have just noticed this posted on another forum (PPRuNE) anyone heard of this problem or is it bullshit ?

I've no interest in cars (really)
But,I have a friend 75 yrs old who is very well heeled and he bought a new F Type c 3 yrs ago as soon as it came out. He gave us his tale of woe in a restaurant on Fri evening.
After 1 year the engine had to be changed
After year two it went in for a second engine change
The problem was, in both cases, the supercharger (or whatever it's called now) which is apparently installed inside the vee of the engine. The casing had cracked on both occasions and leaked whatever into the engine.
Obviously he was concerned about any resale value after a double engine change.
I suppose to their credit the Jaguar Agents took back this duff F Type and gave him a substantial trade in value

While it is always possible that someone got a car with significant defects (no manufacturer can get it right 100% of the time), this one sounds a bit dubious me and has many details missing that could illuminate the veracity and potential complexity of the story. As a result it reads more like someone trying to take a shot at the brand and the car with only anecdotal information. Real problems with all autos exist (Jaguar as well) and it would be nice for folks to glean the facts before trashing in forums like this person did.

Certainly possible, but I don't put much credence in it. Here's why. Forums are places where (inter alia) people complain about the problems with their car. In fact if the you read the forum about any car you'll read about so many problems you'll be frightened to buy it. Forums are not usually statistically representative of car problems. That of course doesn't mean that they don't correlate problem reports.

Given the above, I can't remember seeing any threads here about supercharger failures. Maybe there are, but it is certainly not endemic like the stereo or gas filler problems.

Sounds like BS; let the '75 year old friend' chime in here. I've been an active owner, club member for a long time and haven't heard this sort of tragedy: 2 engines in 2 years. And the line "[supercharger] apparently installed inside the vee of the engine" -- yeah, it is there all right, not "apparently" - like this is a JLR engineering mistake?? Given the fact that our wonderful English cars have 51% German engineering content (including most of the drive train) I'd say that this is BS.

I'm skeptical of any story that has multiple hand-offs. Conceptually possible (my Dad even had an engine replacement compliments of Rolls), but to happen twice to the same person, in 12 months, on a limited production car, seems unlikely. He should have bought a Powerball ticket, instead.

I thought that was just normal Jaguar ownership. I'm already on my 3rd engine now, 2nd transmission, 4th set of seats, and I've burnt to the ground twice. But I keep coming back because it's a Jaaaaaaaaaaag!

PPRuNE is the forum for that group of people who fly while wearing growbags.

A number of these are noted for letting their mouths exceed VNE.

I hear you, I've been amazed of the velocity some people's mouths can exceed, but I'm stumped as to the term "growbag."

A growbag is slang for the all in one flying suit that RAF fighter pilots wear.

FWIW all PD superchargers are located inside the Vee of any V designed engine or on top of the heads in the case of a inline engine.
