Default Lights and Limp mode

Hey guys,

I have a little problem with my 2019 F-Type R. I was having issues with the interior lights flickering in the cabin. It’s my first Jaguar, so I was a little skeptical about that, but after 2 months of ownership, the problem got worse. The screen/infotainment flickers on and off weirdly.

I thought maybe the battery was bad, so I went ahead and changed it right away since it was the OEM battery from the factory. With the new battery, I thought the problem was fixed, but then one night it went into limp mode on the highway. The “D” on the dash turned on and off, and the car went into neutral. I stopped on the highway, put it in Park, then back in Drive, and it drives fine. Still a bit of flickers but drove it home fine.

I was fully confused at that point. Then I ran all the codes with my mechanic friend (I’ll put them at the bottom), but I can’t make much sense of them. Now my next thought after the battery is the alternator. Also, I noticed it idles rough at times, and the lights flicker at the same frequency as the rough idle.

If anyone knows the problem or has ideas, feel free to let me know.

Im guessing these codes popped on after the car went into limp mode but i don't know not sure. Seen a lot of problems related to CAN in these forums but unsure what my next step is. Anything helps Thanks.

You may not accept this but your battery (that is, low voltage) can cause all of these reported faults. If your new battery was not fully charged before or immediately after installation it may never have reached full charge. And your driving pattern may not be sufficient to keep the battery at full charge - and this is particularly true in the winter.
So job #1 is to verify the battery voltage output.
Many owners keep their cars on a good battery maintainer (CTEK being the favoured one) - a guarantee that the battery will not be the culprit. By the way, EVERY luxury car manufacturer has sold the CTEK units through their dealerships (and with the manufacturer’s logo: Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maserati, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes, Bugatti, BMW…and every other premium make) for the very same reason: the need for full battery voltage output.

Check for a loose ground connection .

Also make sure the red warning triangle on the dash goes out after you have parked and locked the car for ten minutes. If it does not your battery is being drained. This is a known issue. To correct it disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute and then reattach it.

There have been reports of loose connections between the battery in the trunk (boot) and the engine compartment...worth checking each end of the fat red wire!

One loose, corroded or frayed wire is responsible for all those symptoms and codes - just need to find it. The flickering interior lights is your best first clue. The passenger seat sensor is your second clue. Time to pull up the passenger seat carpet and access the junction boxes (thanks again to @DJS:

Default Update: No good

Hey guys,

So after all your messages to help figure out this problem, I charged the battery fully. I also checked the red triangle to see if it goes to sleep, and it does. I then tried removing the negative end of the battery for a couple of minutes to see if the problem was related to insomnia or draining from the OBD port. After two days, it seemed that one of these things worked. Then suddenly, on a startup, the lights flickered a bit, and the same problems came back: ABS, transmission fault “D” on the dash flickering, and it’s throwing me into neutral while I’m driving. The infotainment system is also fully shutting off. I’ll attach videos of what I was able to capture.

So now I think the battery is getting drained because of a low-power alternator. After the problem I had today, I plugged the battery in to get charged and it read 12.4 V, and after two hours it was at 15.4 V. I’m no electrician, but I think that might be a little weird.

I wanted to know if anyone thinks it might need a new alternator. I checked the battery area for loose wires and was moving them around while the car was on to see if any flickering would start, but nothing happened, so I think the wires are good. As for the alternator, I’m wondering if an old alternator that’s not producing enough power could cause these problems.

One of the videos is the flicker/pulse and the other is the power cut off.
Feel free to help in the replies.
Thanks guys

I got a voltmeter that plugs into the dash 12V socket so I can monitor the voltage in real time while driving. Might be worth trying that - I see over 14V when on the move so you could check if yours is low, to indicate a failing alternator.

@AlexL0 12.4V is fine. It's not the alternator. And yes 15.4V is weird - this was measured at the battery terminals with charging complete and disconnected?

What do you have, a convertible or coupe? What battery charger are you using? Any rain recently on the car?

Paging @DJS - need your help on the wiring diagram that would explain the codes above. There is likely one wire involved.

@AlexL0 Did you pull your passenger seat carpets up and look at the wiring for any corrosion or water intrusion?

You can also do a CJB / BCM reset like @djyankees31 did:

I don't recall hearing of many alternator issues here, although I think there was a report of a coolant leak causing one.

I got flickering only once and it was a bad connection at the battery. Since you've just been there, I'm seconding the suggestion by Borbor to carefully check all the grounds.
