Default Manual Transmission Fluid

Did a search and could not find any information on the subject. Has anyone changed their 6MT transmission fluid? Is it even needed? I understand typically gear oil is used for many manual transmissions.

I have some time this holiday season and will be doing a few fluid changes, thus am curious.

I would change it...but I'm **** about maintenance.

Some manual transmissions do best with specific friction additives (looking at Honda, here). But on those, frequent fluid changes even with aftermarket brews keeps syncros shifting smoothly.

I found some references to using Ford full synthetic MTF, also Pentosin FFL-3.

I'm sure someone with better SEARCH skills will find more details...once you get the part number for Jaguar OEM fluid, you could search THAT.
EDIT: Like rummy636. HeeHee.

I got some oil at the same time I got some for my differential. The one listed by Red Line is their DCTF. I cross-referenced it at the time on their OEM Compatibility link with the specification from ZF's website for the transmission.

I have not yet changed it, although I did change the diff oil.

Yes I'm definitely going to do the diff oil, seems easy enough. And wow, I am surprised by a 10 year/150k interval. I have never changed MT fluid before so I guess I am just more used to 30k miles roughly with a lot of ATs. I suppose it is better than saying it is lifetime fluid.

A change interval of 10 years/150k miles is too long for me with the engine running closer to the rated torque limit of the gearbox. I just didn't get it done before the weather turned, and with needing to work in the driveway it's going to wait for a bit. At only 45k miles I'm sure things are OK waiting for spring. I'm not driving nearly as much these days.

LOL

Ours needed 3 days of soaking in PB Blaster (penetrant) before I could release the fill nut. (ALWAYS release the fill before draining!)

<SEEMS> is the key word...

I'm happy to live in a place free from salted roads. Mine was easy, except for working with the car on fairly low ramps.

Here is likely all the info you will need on your Manual Transmission...Hope this helps.

I also have several DIY's on here for the Transfer Case, and Diffs.

Good luck...And Merry Christmas...

Much appreciated Rock. That's a very detailed PDF, I'll save it to read for later. Haven't actually gotten around to my oil change yet, so will be doing this a bit later since I am prioritizing that.

So I went down the 'oil thread' rabbithole, mostly on various BMW forums. Seems like Pentosin FFL-3, which is also used by Porsche PDKs, is equivalent to BMW MTF LT-5 (also stated by ZF). There seem to be many OE replacements from various manufacturers (Amsoil DCT, Redline DCTF, etc) for these two, which are <$20. Although for a minor savings, might as well go with the ZF recommended Pentosin.

That is my philosophy:

Since I'm doing the work myself, its STILL better to spend a couple bux extra on factory parts.

Especially with fluids of unknown friction characteristics...I am skeptical of "Jack-Of-All-Trades fluids.

If I had an automatic I'd be more inclined to use only the specific, manufacturer's recommended fluid, but a manual transmission is a more straightforward mechanism. I'm confident the Red Line equivalent will do the job, and still have some residual loyalty to Red Line from my racing days.
