Default My catalytic converters failed so I made a video of what catless downpipes sound like

My cats blew out at 68k miles right after installing the VAP tune and pulley, so I removed them and gutted the OEM downpipes for fun.

This is probably the loudest V6 F-Type combination. Catless downpipes, modified OEM muffler, and resonator delete. Luckily the exhaust valves still work to save my ears.

Without any back pressure, the low down torque is noticeably less, but it pulls hard in the high RPMs. VAP was kind enough to revise my tune to eliminate the CEL.

This was done for testing purposes since there isn’t really any video or sound clips of Catless V6 F types.

I have been hearing a lot about cats failing in the F types V6s or V8s and other supercharged jaguar models and I am worried about my 2014 XFR. Anyone found the reason why they fail? Is it a design flaw? Is it too much output for stock cats? I am on 100% stock XFR besides VAP tune. I have been looking into Magnaflow 100 cell cats (metal core) for more durability as a precaution for when my cats fail.

This don't to seem as much of a problem with RS Audis or M BMWs or even AMG Mercs,

OP what were the symptoms of your failing cats? loss of power? hesitation on hard accelerations? CEL? please elaborate

Thanks in advance,

The main symptom I had was the car sounded less pleasing. Idle sounded like a diesel truck. I also had some black smoke coming out of the exhaust at high rpm pulls. I checked the codes and got bank 1 catalyst below efficiency threshold code p0420. I tried to continue driving it hard, but eventually all of bank 1 cylinders would misfire at high RPMs due to clogged cat.

My guess is that pushing more power via tune will accelerate the wear and tear, mixed with the burbles and bouncing of the rev limiter at high rpm. My bank 1 catalytic converter was completely destroyed and the other cat was just beginning to break down too.

Default Sounds much better after installing mini mufflers.

This whole setup sounds much better after installing two of these:

https://www.amazon.com/TOTALFLOW-644-Muffler-Inlet-2-5-Diameter/dp/B07RYC5XN5/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=totalflow+644&qid=1610059721&sr=8-1 https://www.amazon.com/TOTALFLOW-644-Muffler-Inlet-2-5-Diameter/dp/B07RYC5XN5/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=totalflow+644&qid=1610059721&sr=8-1

Less rasp, slightly less volume, and better idle noise. Sound clips coming soon on my channel.

These tiny mufflers really work!

Installed on the catless downpipes so they can be removed easily.

Any reason (other than wanting to see what the gutted cats sound like) you didn’t take it to the dealership and have them warranty the cats?

I have VAP pulley/tune installed along with an x-pipe replacing the resonator so the stock downpipes have to be cut out. I am pretty sure they were not going to replace it for free so I found some used cats on ebay for passing inspection.

Yea! Much better exhaust sound. It’s still loud but cleaner sounding. I am surprised how these tiny mufflers work lol. It’s not a huge difference, but it is noticeable.

What is you O2 sensor set up and are you getting any codes for them?
I ask because the F-Type (both V8 and V6) has six O2 sensors three each side, one pre-cat one mid-cat and one post cat and I can't see an easy way to keep all of them and/or keep them happy with your set up. I think I can juuust see a post cat one each side.

I still have the O2 sensors in the same exact spots. Even with the mini muffler welded before the o2 sensors, I am still not getting any codes or issues luckily. It's nice being able to drive without any worry of blowing out any cats. The revised VAP tune to get rid of the CEL might have something to do with keeping the O2 sensors happy.

Ahhh got it. did not know you had modified the downpipes/cats. I'll have to look through your YouTube videos later on today!

Yea, it is quite a unique setup. Check out my exhaust setup playlist for more info.

Default I was able to improve the exhaust sound with the $20 Amazon Mini Mufflers

Less rasp, less drone, and better idle noise. Still sounds really good when full throttle.

I think I get it now - you have gutted the cats but still kept them in place with all the O2 sensors still in place including the mid-cat ones, and the mini mufflers are welded on in line just behind the gutted cats.

That's correct. No issues thus far. The mini mufflers actually do make a noticeable difference.

Mini mufflers welded to the temporary gutted downpipes. Very happy with the fuller and more refined exhaust sound.
