Default My (used) car only came with one key

How should I go about getting a replacement back-up fob without getting reamed by the dealer.

Can I buy a fob off eBay and just pay for programming? Can a locksmith transfer the code from my existing key to the new fob?

What's the best way to do this?

Best way is go to a dealer. I bought a 94 XJS with one key, went to a dealer, they had to send out for it - it was cut and at the dealer within a day. Cost me $138, but saved me the hassle of buying without certainty on eBay and trying to find a locksmith who can cut it. Dealer can also do the programming. All they need to cut and program is the VIN.

We have no key, just the fob. I would think you'd have to go through a dealer. I know smart keys can be hundreds of dollars, but with no key, but I guess we won't know until you ask.

Sure, we do. There is an emergency key hidden inside. I have tried the the eBay way with my MINI. By the time you are done with getting the key cut and the programming done on the eBay acquisition, you are no money ahead and a big headache behind. Go to the dealer, ante up the $200-250 and get on your way. Oh...and make certain you have the car or your registration with you so that you can verify ownership.

Take it to the dealer.

Since 2014 when heaps of keyless-entry Range Rovers in the UK were being hacked and stolen, JLR implemented a massive security upgrade to the Keyless Entry system.

It's now a massive headache for anyone except the dealer to program keys/fobs to a 2014 onward JLR vehicle.
