The Next Chapter in the F-Type Exhaust Saga (Soundtrack, Crackles, Pops etc)
First of all, thank you to all that responded to my previous posts. This forum is very helpful indeed, in so many ways. For example, before taking in my 2017 F-Type V8 R convertible (without the noise canceling/ neutering software update) for service, I read in the forum about the exhaust flaps sometimes not opening properly. That was the case on my car as well and Jaguar installed new exhaust parts. Thank you forum!
The car has been driven very little since I bought it last summer and has just over 51K miles on it. Given the "fear" of the dealer updating the software and the modest use of the car, I did not rush to bring it in for the 52K/ 12 month service. After the service was supposedly overdue by a couple of days the check engine light came on (yellow).
That happened to me previously with a Mercedes and that dealer claimed the check engine light came on because I didn't screw in the fuel cap tightly enough. Either way, I took the vehicle in for service last Friday. The dealer says that the car is in perfect shape and states the check engine light is on because the vehicle software needs to be updated. As a secondary measure the service advisor mentioned changing the catalytic converters (there is posts in the forum about the catalytic converters). Interestingly, the service advisor has been candid that the software update would indeed affect performance and most importantly sound.
Would love to hear your thoughts on what to do.
Driving around with the check engine light on seems like a bad idea, not least because that would prevent alerting me when something happens that would ordinarily cause it to go on. This post in the x350 forum has me a bit concerned about the catalytic converters though, https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...rmance-241679/. Perhaps its an idea to have those changed but not update the software?
Last but not least those who are also concerned about preventing the software update might be interested in hearing that both times the car has been in for service, the dealer made a note on the intake form/ service notes that no software update was to be made. That was also confirmed on the paperwork before retrieving the car. Additionally, I put a note on the dash and do a system read-out with the SDD before handing over the car and after receiving it back.
Thanks a lot!

Dealer is not the best way to resolve this issue. The first step is to understand what the code is, there is no such as "the check engine light is on because the vehicle software needs to be updated." JLR bundled 'quiet' patch with O2 sensor update, but even original worked. You might only need new senors.
Did you recently fill up the gas tank? If so, make sure the gas cap is tight. That will trigger a CEL due to small evaporative leak..One of the most common CELs. Just a thought...

Taking my MY 17 premium coupe man trans to dealer tomorrow/ Wed. for active exhaust check. New to me this past fall, Oct.2020, the car did have the snaps/crackles,etc when I test drove it (performance car dealer, not jaguar dealer). I turned it off at that time so I could hear what the car was doing. I completely understand the functionality of the Dynamic mode switch and the AE switch. After getting the car home @300 miles I drove it around a few weeks before winter storage. Though the red inst lights are on, and Dynamic switch is on and AE there is no longer any crackle/pop etc. Out of storage this week and tested for louder exhaust note. With DM and AE on, definitely louder exhaust and less so when those two are off. Had local Jaguar service car before storage, but Crackles were gone before that. Hope to make sure that all components of exhaust are working, I can live without the pops and crackles. Will know more tomorrow
Thanks!
The answer is yes. I like the powerful acceleration the engine provides and love the soundtrack even more when using the paddle shifters. Alas, the local gas stations and I have become intimately familiar.

Thought to add a quick update:
The dealer still hasn't let me know the exact error code.
This morning, miraculously, the check engine light went away. That has me think @Therock88 may have been right.
