Prior to my mistake, I could push that button and the trunk would unlatch with the car locked.

Yes, if you had the key fob on you. Part of the keyless entry system.

The F-Type lives again.
The thread on accessing the trunk latch power wire saved me.

Good news indeed. Just to close this, what was the cause of the total power failure?

Me. I was the cause.
I did not know that the two red wires attached to the top of the cradle/bracket that the secondary battery was in needed to be connected together to power the car.
Once I put everything back, the car powered up. You could hear the chime for the door being open and various other things enjoying the return of power.
