I learned to put the clips on when returning to stock pads yesterday (though destroyed a couple of the silver metal bits wrapping the ends of the clips) and the clanking is gone.
Notice any difference after losing the metal clips? Same happened to me, and I abandoned them - and now worry about it (Car is parked for a snowy winter - haven't drive on the new brake pads yet). Doesn'

t look like those metal clips do anything... nothing for them to grab on to etc.

Those little metal clips push the feet of the anti-rattle clip out an extra 2 or 3 mm, which then provides a lot more tension/pressure on the clip. One reason why the anti-rattle clips are a PITA to refit.
I suspect that makes a big difference to whether or not you get pad rattle.

Thanks, I'll either make a replacement out of aluminum or order replacement anti-rattle clips - unless someone has a better idea.

Yep, replacement anti-rattle clips for the 380 mm front brakes are available.
Part # C2D3798, see here for example: https://www.brit-car.co.uk/search.ph...t=&xPerPage=10
