Default Now it is Howling!

The shop replaced the pinion seal. No longer leaking. Now the car emits a howling sound.

Not always, just sometimes like after running at 65 MPH for 45 minutes and then slow to 35, here comes the howl.

Any thoughts on the cause of this folks, Unhinged?

Best,

Is your car no longer under warranty?

Yes it is. It's in the shop now. It seems to me that many of the folks on this forum, are more learned than the dealership.

Looking to see if others have experienced the howling.

Ah, gotcha. When you say pinion, are you talking diff? How bad was your leak? If it was bad enough the run the diff somewhat dry, the gears could have become damaged causing the howling.

Yes, seal for the input shaft on the dif. Very slight leak. Others here have had that issue. I do not think the unit was low on oil. It may not be the dif howling, but then what else could it be?

If its like the old diffs where there is a crush tube they may not have re tightened to the correct position?

Something like that. I had a racing diff that howled because the pinion gears weren't shimmed properly and the tolerance between the ring and pinion gears was too tight.

I also had my pinion seal replaced for the same leak. A howl and a vibration was then apparent at highway speeds. Diagnosis at Scarborough Jaguar while attending the blueberry blast was that they over torqued the pinion when reassembling everything, thus buggering the operating angle of the drive shaft. It is now back in the local shop where they can hopefully fix it without breaking anything else.

Dealership decided to changed the unit. I'm getting a new differential! Under warranty! I wonder is this a new design, better unit or the same old POS DIF.....

I bought this FT in 10/2017 and it has only been in the shop for 14 days, so far! Only 14 days! That is 13 days longer than any car I've ever owned. And I've owned a lot!

Like they say, "you have to have a sense of humor to own a Jag."
