OBD2 Tools for monitoring Engine Oil/Coolant Temps?
Anyone using a OBD2 plug in tool to monitor live engine oil/coolant temps? I bought the F16 OBD2 tool off amazon and went to use it for the first time and immediately this happened:
The instrument cluster screen behind the steering wheel started dinging like every 4-5 seconds like when you get a warning. Then there was a gearbox fault, a traction control fault, and finally a parking fault. I was in shock. I pulled the F16 off and pulled over and safely turned the car off. It would not restart for several minutes. Then restarted fine and all codes were gone, and it drove fine. I have used this tool on my 12 XKR without issue.
Talked to dealership they said the electrics with the OBD2 are very different on these newer jags then the older XKR and they often "DO NOT LIKE" anything accessing data from the OBD2.
Therefore I am posing the question if anyone at all has ever used a real time data with the OBD2 without issue on the Ftype??
What year f type do you have? For a few years around 2015-2018 there is an issue on some cars where the OBD port doesn't close down properly and some modules stay awake and quickly drain the battery. The warning symptoms you describe sound like a low battery. It's easy to fix - disconnect battery terminal for 20s and that resets it. I have the issue on my car so I don't use the OBD unless I have to get something and then I reset it. Also have to do the battery disconnect annually after state inspection
@Lothar52 Good grief - that is crazy. I have the same year as you, and your dealer is misinformed - they would prefer you use their services, of course!
I use a Veepeak and keep it plugged in always. The F16 must have some serious issue in the F-Type. Try the Veepeak instead.
I use the Veepeak with Torque Pro running on an Android phone. I never drive the car without the coolant and oil temperature displayed and alarms set for 220F visual and 230F audio. If a coolant pipe blows I want to know immediately so I can save the engine from certain death.

exactly why I would want to monitor them temps real time. You need ti know what is normal temps in driving conditions for your car and know when something is not right and pull over and stop 🛑

problem is I’m on a iPhone. Does it work on that or does anyone have suggestions for iPhone app?
I am an iPhone user too. But you need an inexpensive Android device as @clubairth1 confirms - I have a Moto 5G phone wi-fi tethered to my iPhone and it works great. Here is my setup:
Yes I just found it too cheap to NOT get one for this. Plus for my old eyes that 8" screen beats the pants off a phone screen.
Hey one question as I have not done this yet.
Do you set audible alarms for coolant temperature or anything else?

@clubairth1 I have it for coolant AND oil, nothing else. If (and, of course, at some point when) the audible alarm goes off at 230F (110C) I pull right over and turn the engine off.
When you took your screen shot, was it just warming up? Your highest coolant temp is 90C (194F) which is much less than my max (225F after first start of the day and fully warm after ~10 minutes then quickly goes down to <200F).
It's just an example and I reconfigure my gauges now and then depending on what I am most interested in. I also keep a digital volt meter plugged into the power outlet in the center console. I have been lazy as far as consistent use of the gauges. Should be using them with that audible alarm for coolant temperature too.
I wish they had installed that alarm at the factory. No telling how many engines they could have saved. Of course people would probably ignore that too on the way to engine destruction.

Another vote for Torque Pro. Been using it for years and it just flat works!
I would dump the crappy iphone. I got an 8" Android tablet for $80. Way better! Larger screen and so much easy to see and use.

I don't even know the first thing about purchasing an android table.... anybody got an amazon link? also does anyone have a link to the torque pro? can give a bit of kickback if I purchase these through that link. Thanks

mine is a 2019 F-Type R AWD. A parts shop that ran my VIN told me it's a "2019.5" so apparently I got a late 2019 update. I have the larger infotainment screen but still have analogue odometer.
Probably any Android tablet would be fine. Just do a search on TP. The official version is only $5 so very cheap.
Here is an example of how flexible this system is. I was doing a fluid change on a late model MB 350E convertible. The car has the same 6 speed ZF we are so familiar with in the Jaguar world. So you need to monitor the fluid temperature to set the correct fluid level.
With some searching I found that there are all kinds of custom PID packs for TP. We have a great set built by Cambo just for Jaguars. I found and installed the Chrysler/MB PID pack. This car was an older MB back when they owned Chrysler. So it was listed for both brands.
Normally people try to read the fluid temperature by using an IR gun and that works but is a PIA! Too many things going on at once plus the lovely position of the fill plug right next to a scalding catalytic converter!! With this setup I made a large single custom gauge dashboard. Now the TOT (Transmission Oil Temperature) is easy to read and it's big enough that the tablet can be placed safely out of the way but still very readable.
Here I am sitting in the drivers seat with the car running monitoring the fluid temperature in real time. Now I know how close I am and can raise the car on the lift to make the final adjustment.
I have a heavy rubber case on mine and it can withstand drops of 4'-5' to concrete without damage. Yes it will happen in the shop!
A little bit of work but once you do some custom PIDS it's not hard.

Pretty sure thats the one i have as well (Veespeak), you just leave it plugged in eh? Guess that negates the draw from a 'disconnection'. I may start this as well.
@Evoex , always plugged in and transmitting BT. The current draw is minuscule. I monitor 24/7 with an Ancel BM300Pro which is also drawing current and transmitting - highly recommend getting this unit for all F-Type owners.

Veespeak up and running. Bit bothered we don't have transmission temp...would like to know how that's holding up during spirited days.
@Evoex I agree that would be nice. Have you set the visible and audible alarms yet for coolant and oil temp?
@clubairth1 Are you using the original @CamboPIDs? I can't seem to get them to work for my 2019. The IAT is what I really want. I think with all the misfires going on around this forum I am going to start monitoring real time fuel trim as well to get a baseline in case something happens down the road.
@Lothar52 Just get a cheap, large Android phone from one of the mobile companies with a SIM card and you are good to go without tethering. I just got the Moto 5G 2025 free from my mobile company with a year of free use by just calling in and asking questions. A lot of deals going on as always. Unfortunately small tablets (less than 8 inches) are hard to find and may lack Android Auto and GSM (such as the
