Default obnoxious rev on start no more

We all probably got the F Type partly for the sound. But sometimes the rev on startup is a bit too much. Especially if you park in an enclosed parking garage that echoes and amplify. Your neighbor thinks your a dbag. But i discovered how to avoid this. Press the start stop button without pressing the brakes. This turns on the accessories. Then press the brakes and start as normal. Doesn't rev to 7k rpm!

Thanks. While we're at it, do you have any easy ways to perform at-home self castration?

You drive a Jaguar, most likely the neighbors don't like just because of that. Enjoy the cat.

Neighbors can go to hell.
IF you want to be popular buy a Prius and care what strangers think.
When my neighbour revs his Lamborghini I applaud it while my wife rolls her eyes and then cheekily says, the F-Type sounds more masculine. Unh.
Its good to be bad.

LOL well said!
But shift, thanks for figuring this out. I would actually use it in quiet neighborhoods when I'm out late

Thanks for that. Funny I never noticed it - I'll try it this morning.

Thanks, I'll try this next time out. Sometimes I'm at a location or in an area that the noisy start up would be a bit much ... ie: late at night in a residential area and no need to screw up someone else's quiet evening.

I tried it this morning and didn't notice a difference. Guess I'll do some more controlled experimentation. My wife will wonder what the heck I am up to, but it's good to keep her guessing.

I've always assumed that not all of my neighbors appreciate delicious cars sounds as much as I do. I see no harm or shame in showing some consideration.....especially at those times when most of the world expects peace and quiet.

Years ago I lived in an apartment complex and had a Mustang with a fairly aggressive exhaust. The rev-on-startup was a bit obnoxious...and embarrassing... as the noise reverberated in the covered parking area we had. Fortunately my parking slot was such that I could very easy just let the car roll outside before starting the engine.

Of course it has never been in issue with my XJR. It was made when Jaguar still believed that *any sound whatsoever* coming from the exhaust pipes was simply..well... uncouth and not to be tolerated

Cheers
DD

It doesn't make any difference.

The ferocity of the start is the same whether you follow either sequence in the OP.

The thing that makes it louder is starting from cold. When the car is warm the starts are quieter, as are subsequent starts right after the first cold start which is perhaps what led to the OP. Either way, the first start from cold is the same regardless of the start up procedure.

I do wish there was a stealth mode though, the car really ought to have one.

So you're telling me that you don't like starting it in an enclosed parking garage?

That's just wrong.

Oh, doesn't seem to work on a UK spec V6...

I think the startup is one of the best part/process of the car... My AMG Black is similar except it tames down more after warm in. Its an OEM exhaust so fawk the neighbors LOL. I joke but I had to valet my car a few times last week and both times, while I couldnt see the car parked in the garage close by, I could hear it on start up. Made me smile- love the start up.

With the theatrical effects Jaguar designed into this car, I almost feel obligated to put on a show for curious admirers. It’s funny to see the reactions at the gas station when I start it after filling up. I have to say that the startup sound this car makes never grows old, but there are times when I leave at early hours and would prefer not to annoy my nice neighbors.

I too dislike the start-up high rev. However, if you do as the poster said, the tach will show the engine really revs to about 2,000 rpm. A normal start sweeps the tach needle to 7-8K as part of the instrument check. The engine starts while the tach needle is at full sweep. There's really no difference in actual RPM's at start-up with either method.

It's not that loud. Most of the time it's fine. For me it's because my parking garage (shared building) is an enclosed concrete echo chamber. The other time is on a quiet late night. 3am, don't really need to make all the noise when everybody is sleeping. Under normal circumstances it's fine.

Sometimes I get a snort/backfire on startup, sometimes not. Seems like it doesn't with your trick, may be a bit milder with the revs. Hard to tell, as the tach doesn't give you the real story on startup.
