Default Oil Drain Plug

Anyone know the official torque number for the oil drain plug? Emptied my oil that way and whamo, found some oil around it 🫣. Guess it needs replaced but want to torque it down appropriately.

I get oil drain plugs with my oil change kit, and I never use them since I have a MityVac. PM me if you want one.

From the oil change procedure…

If you need to torque figure for a drain plug you probably shouldn't be changing the oil yourself.

Just to verify that we don't a**sume anything:

A new drain plug should have a rubber o-ring on it. Did you make sure that the OLD o-ring came off when you removed the drain bolt?
Did you wipe the mating surface of the o-ring to remove any dirt or grit and provide a smooth sealing surface?

That 24 Nm should be more than adequate.

+++++++++++

How many pounds of pebbles did you remove from the undertray? I bet your F is FASTER now, as a result!

car was getting a lot of work done and the mechanic wanted to drain the oil after doing timing chain covers via the drain plug. So. He then puts it back on and there is no new crusher washer or whatnot like in my other non jag cars. Sure enough today we looked and whamo... its leaking. I usually drain myself with evacuator.

The factory drain bolt has the rubber o ring under it's flange. The flange contacts the oil pan.

If set to the proper torque, the o ring is not excessively flattened (or torn) when the drain plug is tightened.

You can see this setup on Rock Auto's parts listings, picture 2 on this listing.

I use black RTV around the base of the plug, never had a leak.
