Default Paint damage

I took my car in today to a place that I am having do a clear wrap. The installer immediately looked at the top of the rockers (between the panels) near the rear wheel and showed how the paint is chipped in this area. For my car this is on the passenger side, not the driver side. He said that every F-Type he has seen has chipped paint in this area.

On my car it's about 1/8", but he said some cars have been as long as an inch. Also, this is something that has gone through all layers of paint down to the panel itself.

This is not something that would have been caused by a rock hitting it as it is BETWEEN the panels and there is no damage to the surrounding area. Has anyone else seen this on their car?

Other owners have documented this problem, dealer should fix (repaint). Don't know if the problem re-appears later - others with experience will chime in, I'm sure.

My dealer says there is a bulleton besides just painting, hoping to stop from reoccurring.

There is a recall on this for 2014 cars. The recall involves some rocker panel mounting parts. The issue generally only affects darker colored cars especially BRG and Indigo

Since it's not safety-related, it's not a recall, but there is a TSB, and it will be repaired free of charge. The fix includes a protective backing to keep painted areas from rubbing together.

According to multiple sources here, cars built near the end of the '14MY and all subsequent builds have the protective backing. I've haven't seen any instances of '15 owners reporting this problem.

Mine has this, though it isn't bad enough for me to do anything about it, yet.

To the contrary, I have seen numerous 2015 owners remark of the same problem with their cars. So if the factory thinks they fixed this, they are mistaken.

Mine is a late MY15, so they still had the issue through much of the production run.

Thanks for the additional datapoint. I was relying on "multiple sources here" as I said above, but perhaps that info was dated.

Welcome to the club. Mine was delivered that way, they fixed it and it occurred in the same spot the following year. They fixed it again, but don't know if they did anything more than just repaint it.

Where on the rocker panel is that? The panel gap looks huge...

The left side of that picture is the rear tire well. The right side is toward the passenger door.

This is the seam where the aluminum rear fender assembly meets the plastic lower side rocker panel.

Seam is tight. It's just the angle and lighting of the photo.

I have a 2015 with the same issue. Before I came across this thread, I too thought it was wax between the panels! Definitely chipped off paint.
