Comparisons like this are the reason I have to hear people say "the 911 is faster".
I have nothing but disdain for an article that compares cars in different price classes, yet acts as though the cheaper car is a disappointment.

 

hardwired, I agree. I have owned both cars now, and the better comparison is the 911 4S. The TTS is just a monster on the short straight drag strip and visually seeing the difference between 2.6 to 2.7 seconds and 3.5 seconds makes us forget for a second that 3.5 seconds is actually FAST. Both cars are just terrific and I wish I could swing having both at the same time.

 

Lease payment disparity alone for these 2 cars is quiet ridiculous:
I was offered $1025/mo, $0 down, $0 at signing (12,000 mi/yr) for the 2016 F Type R AWD.
911 Turbo (not S, regular Turbo, if such cars can be called "regular" at all) was $2500/mo with $10,000 down and only 10,000 mi/yr
One simply does not cross-shop these 2 cars. Having said that, a 911 Carrera 4 with PDK competes with the F Type R AWD directly. I have not priced one yet, but I am quiet confident, Porsche won't give it to me for $1025/mo...

It seems like every review takes the car to the track which is somewhat good because you get to see what the car is capable of but realistically what percentage of owners take their car to the track? 1%?

 

Yeah, that's actually why I liked the cnet on cars videos as a complement to the Chris Harris type reviews. It's just as important for us to know about tech and comfort features.
Edit : motor trend videos have a decent balance in their approach, although I find them overly opinionated. Good videos though.

 

kitesurfer, good point. I personally haven't drag raced since my early 20's. I always WANT to badly (on a dedicated strip in controlled environment of course, never on the street) but just cannot get to a track to have some fun. I personally ignore any of the very common attempts to get me to race around town. The most common culprit gunning their engine at me were GTR's number one and tricked out little Honda's second.

And hardwired, the most recent motor trend review I read of the SVR was very positive, They are looking forward to comparing the car during the annual Best Driver's competition and confirmed it would be entered. I know they never include all the pertinent contenders that we want to see head to head, but I still always enjoy the comparisons.

 

Agreed. A new Bugatti is faster than a Porsche 911 turbo so I guess that means the Porsche is a POS. ....same (flawed) logic.

And just as important... the Porsche is ugly compared to the F type R, at least in my book and pretty well anyway I've met that has seem my car and are familiar with a Porsche.

I see someone did 150MPH in a V6 F-type at the most recent event. That was the only F-type I saw, including the archives.

Lance and PhillySingle should find a way to get their cars down there.

I have owned 40 Porsche's (well known in that world) # 39 was the one in the photo with my C7, #40 a Panamera 4S, I no longer have, never really liked it. Less than 24 hours after I bought #39 I started taking it apart, it spent a year and a half in pieces has over 130K in modification (most parts are one offs some I designed myself). It is 11 years old has less than 17K miles on it and is totally worthless (Porsche dealers call it my kit car) to anyone but me. It has no traction controls weight a bit under 2500lbs and has around 610hp, it will kill you in anything but perfect weather conditions. I agree if you want to beat a stock car in a straight line you can do it for a lot less than 72K (a lot less), on a track well that is quite a different story. I am too old for all that stuff anymore, and there will always be a faster car, but in the real world (at least where I live) you are lucky if you get to hit 80 on the highway every now and then. I built that Porsche just to prove I could, but I am now at the been there done that stage of car ownership. I now leave all this up to the next group of lunatics.

 

I'm going this time around. been wanting to do this in my other car but it is still under the knife. Wife is entering as well. I'm hoping for 160-165 runs.

Everyone has to realize that this is just data on video. We all know how fast a Porsche TT is from reading the specs. Anyone who knows anything about cars knows the Porsche costs almost double. And now I'm going to be the dissenting opinion.

I absolutely love videos like this. It's awesome to see when a legitimately fast car gets blown away by another production car. To be honest, I love both cars, so I have no skin in the game. What I think is awesome is to see what the differences in 1/4 times LOOKS like. You get a much better appreciation of what the numbers translate to in terms of car lengths. I wouldn't like it as much if they did not give me the actual numbers though...then it's just making the Jag look bad.
