Pulleys and VAP tune

Default Pulleys and VAP tune

New to the Jaguar world and I am unsure. Are pulleys required for the VAP tune or can I do them after? My APR tuned Audi S5 they were required for the tune. I haven’t seen if they are required since you can choose “none” on the velocity website when configuring. I definitely would add them after, but haven’t found a good shop for the Jag in Salt Lake City yet and if I can would like to do the tune while I look for a shop here.

any insight is appreciated?

You can start with an ECU flash tune only then add a crank and/or supercharger pulley with a modified tune later or do it all at once. Your choice.

VAP themselves say that while you can do just the ECU tune, it adds practically nothing for performance.

That really depends on your starting point. Also, whether a V6 or V8.

I have a V6S which was rated at 380, and the tune alone I think was nominally 416. A base V6 is 340, which also goes to 416. When I ordered the tune I noted that I was interested in adding a pulley later. I got a tune that worked with the stock pulley but was set up to also work with the overdrive pulley. That combination is maybe 435+, although I'm not certain. The tune alone was noticeable, the added pulley noticeable again. I can't speak to the V8.

Heres the V6 pulley and tune video , ill be doing the upper pulley after i do more research on it

I have an indy in Beaver Utah that is experienced in F Type R & R VAP Pulleys and Belts. PM me for info if interested.

I have never heard "VAP", Stuart or Chris EVER make that statement concerning ECU Tune ONLY.
Many on this forum will disagree with this childish response. Would that be a net gain of 0.02%? 1.9%?
One WILL feel the seat of the pants torque increase and crisp RPM/ Shift Changes quite nicely with TUNE ONLY.
Over a period of time many here that I know of Added the Lower Pulley w/Stage 2 Tune for even more kick.

Agreed, it's not just the HP number that the ECU only tune works on, it's the "dead pedal" lag on the gas pedal that benefits from the VAP magic.

As someone with a Base model that went from 335 to 416 hp with a tune alone, I can assure that is very noticeable. If you've got one of the P400 special edition V6s then it may not be as significant but you will still notice.

And that is sort of the point kb58 was making - the VAP tune by itself makes a much bigger difference on the V6 than it does on the V8. Not that the V8 power bump is negligible but it's much less of a bump percentage wise than on the V6.
Going from the VAP website and using the "base" V6 power figure of 340 PS and the "base" R figure of 550 PS the VAP "tune only" takes these to 416 for the V6 and 605 for the V8, which is a 22% increase for the V6 and an 11% increase for the V8. So twice as big a bump for the V6,
The torque increase is a smaller difference, 6.3% on the V6 and 4.8% on the V8, and both IMHO are approaching "negligible".
As has been reported by many members here, both V6 and V8 and myself included, the ''tune only" only makes a perceptible difference at the top end but the Stage 2 tune with added larger crank pulley makes a yuge difference right across the rev range and especially in the mid range due to the sizable bump in torque, much more than the bumps from the tune only.
Bottom line - if you have an R with the stock 550 PS you won't feel much of a bump with just a tune but you will feel a big bump with a larger crank pulley and Stage 2 tune, and I guess an even bigger bump with a smaller SC pulley as well with the Stage 3 tune.
