Default Rear Differential Fill Plug

I'm doing a fluid change on my rear diff' (V8-RWD). I was following one of the excellent guides from this forum. I wasn't sure if I had identified the fill plug correctly, since even with the LHS wheel removed it's a little difficult to see in there. I pulled up the service manual, just to be sure I was looking in the right place, and they have it located on the top:

So now I am confused, as everything else suggests it should be about 1/3 of the way up the LHS cover. Am I over thinking this and the drawing just shows an additional fill plug, that they use during manufacturing?

Should be right here. Hard to get a good picture and it is tucked in there...

For clarity, is that the left rear wheel well - drivers are not always on the same side!

On the mechanical LSD version the plug is just to the right of where #5 is pointing in the diagram from post #1. That's where I'd expect it to be on the e-diff version too, but I don't have a PDF of that. A quick check of an online parts catalog shows a replacement plug hovering around that location but the diagram doesn't show it in place.

I DO have the E-Diff and it is in the same spot.

For the benefit of base model owners who might have run across this topic as a result of a SEARCH:

The fill plug on the base car is in the same position (yellow high-lighted #6) on open-diff cars, too. As stated, visual access is not straightforward. The 'angle of the dangle' is important. For sure, it is an aperture view. Have I emphasized that enough?

I made a few vain attempts to unscrew NOTHING in that little circular embossed 'hole' to the left of #6 at first...

OK cool, thanks. Interestingly, the drawing above of the mechanical diff' seems to show the same top mounted fill/level plug. So perhaps it is fitted to all models? I can't image how anyone would get to it, without dropping the diff. I did locate the side plug. It just takes some serious contortion to get in close enough to see it.

Did you look at my DIY? I show exactly how to get to it and which tools.

I looked at it and found it helpful, modified for tools I had on hand. I used a 3/8" drive short hex bit and some combination of extensions. I think I used a wobbly one but can't remember with certainty, but probably ended up with about 12" so I had a good swing on the ratchet handle. A flex-head ratchet helped. I used a variation of your "IV bottle" technique, but instead snaked a tube through the spokes (wheel left on). I pumped the fluid in with a big syringe designed for setting oil level in motorcycle forks.

Sure did. Found it very helpful thanks. Just got a little nervous when my service manual showed contradictory information on the fill plug location. Don’t want to put it in the wrong hole
