Default Recommendations on new tires?

I have a 2014 F-Type V8s, with the factory Pirelli p-zero tires still in service. The car is low mileage, only driven in the summer, and rarely in the rain.

I'd like to replace them with an updated tire that might hopefully reduce the tendency to fish-tail on hard acceleration.

Has anyone purchased new tires recently and could you share your experience?

There are many tire threads on here. Probably the most popular summer tire here is the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (‘PS4S’), and the Continental ExtremeContact DWS is popular for all-seasons. I’m sure other recommendations will follow…

Both of the previous recommendations are good choices. But no tire is gonna do much to keep the rear end in line with a V8 RWD car. If the P1’s are original to the car it is past time to have them replaced due to age anyway. I hope you let us know how whatever you choose performs for you.

Basically any tires other than the OEM P-Zeros. I ran Falken Azenis fk510 after I lost faith in my P-Zeros (I ditched them at 7,000 miles) and they were a huge improvement, but only lasted about 15,00 miles. I then went with Bridgestone Potenza re980as, which were also great tires. I wanted the new Michelen All Seasons, but they weren't out in the front size I need yet, Regardless, I had no issues with the Bridgestones,

Thanks for the recommendations. The p-zeroes are very low mileage and have spent most of their first 7 years in dark storage, until I bought the car last May with 8,900 km on the clock. There are zero cracks (yes, really zero cracks) in the tires and they have most of their original tread. Tires age out largely due to UV, of which these tires have not seen much. I could keep them another year if it weren't for the fact that they really are poor tires in so many ways.

The prevailing opinion on this site, and the the ratings on TireRack.com, all point to the Michelin P4S. I'd like to go with these but they are out of stock everywhere I've looked. Any recommendations on a supplier?

I had the same issue with P4S, ended up going with Conti ECS - took it to autox and trackcross and worked great. Would recommend if you are looking for another option.

According to the chat-bot on michelin.com, they are still making the Pilot Sport 4S (‘PS4S’) tires, but they are back-ordered. The car is going to come off the road in the coming weeks, so I am able to wait and see if they become available.

Two things:

The Pirelli Pzeros were crap from day one. We are recommending the PS4S’s because they are a huge upgrade to the car. Period.

I recently had to replace the rear PS4S’s. The Rack and Discount Direct were showing sold out but my local Discount store found a set in another store and had them shipped down here. Supposedly they are sold out “for the season” and will be available for next summer.

I disagree. I found that switching out the P-Zeros absolutely transformed the car. It took it from a scary car that would step out on a cloverleaf to an absolute beast that stuck. The way the AWD system is setup on these cars, the AWD cars are just as prone to step out, they just have more assistance in recovering.

I'm running PIRELLI P ZERO CORSA (PZC4) PNCS MC 305/30ZR20 on the rears. They are pricey but they stick really well and provide a reliable backend performance when on the power. I'm running over 600 ft/lb torque with the RWD V8.

Another benefit, is that the tires are extremely quite.

I also run these tires on a Corvette C7 with 850ft/lb torque. So much better than the CUP2's which were scary and dangerous.

I lucked out last month - TPMS warning, obvious small nail in left rear tire. MPS4S tire was at month 22 out of Tire Rack's 24-month warranty. At the time, Tire Rack had the rear (what I needed) in stock, but not the front. The insurance gave me what I paid for the tire 2 years ago, which didn't quite cover the new one, but I'm fine with that.

The upshot of that is that, as you know, there are supply issues all over the place, and tires are no exception. I believe the previous Michelin Pilot Super Sport (MPSS) has been discontinued? That was a fine tire, replaced by the even more fine PS4S.

I have to agree with others here PS4S is a great choice. I hear the Conti’s are better in the wet but read you rarely drive in rain. It’s hard to find a better tire than the PS4S unless your compromise ride, noise, treadwear etc by going to a Cup2 motorsport type tire. I have them on my Audi and would gladly buy them again.

I was able to get a set of Michelin PS4S recently with no supply problems but the sizes are a little wider than stock so perhaps they're not in as high demand. I was never excited by the P-Zero Neros that came stock and jumped to Michelins when the rears wore out. I dumped the fronts even though they had life left in them.

On previous cars I've been happy with all-season Bridgestones. I've run sets of RE960AS Pole Position and RE970AS Pole Position. The latter were also replacement for P-Zeros (Volvo C30). I might have gone with those when my P-Zeros wore out but decided to go summer instead of all-season. The number of days here below 40F is quite small.

I replaced my rear P-Zeros for PS4Ss and heard no noticable difference.

Also recommend the Conti ExtremeContact Sport. Had the PS4S in the cart but A) the Conti's were ~$400 cheaper and B) were going to be delivered quite a bit sooner. They have performed great thusfar.

And yes, TireRack is a good source. I attempted to go through TireBuyer initially and would strongly, strongly recommend against them.

Same here. The PS4S have gotten a bit noisier as they have worn down, nearly to the wear markers now.

How many miles, Oz? Do you get more than the 10,000 I manage on my Jags?

I have done around 42,000 km on the MPS4S so around 26,000 miles.
But mainly fairly gentle/steady driving in that time, not much in the way of skids and slides!
I have learned over the years that correct wheel alignment is key to even wear across the tread face and increased tread life, followed by correct pressures.
I had the VAP lowering springs fitted a few weeks after the new MPS4S and got a full wheel alignment at the same time and have never needed another alignment since.

I also vote for the PS4S is about as good of a tire as you can get. 255/35/20 seems to be on backorder with no in-stock date, however.
