Only owned my SVR for a few months but I noticed when, for example, traversing a parking lot with tight turns while the car is cold that the front wheels tend to skip, very much like when you're driving a 4x4 truck and have the front diff locked. It appears to go away once the car warms up. Dealer wasn't worried about when they looked at the car, but also I didn't get a confirmed "yes this is normal" response. Do others with SVR and R AWD cars have this experience?

 

Even RWD cars can 'hop' a bit for slow, tight turns, though I wouldn't expect that to change when warmed up.

 

Yep, it's known as "tyre skip" over on the pommy forums, apparently very common on all/most modern Jags in Blighty in winter.
It's due to the tyres themselves being cold so once they warm up it goes away.

Thanks for the responses. I'm generally familiar with steering geometry and the interaction there. It's just this behavior seemed MUCH more significant than anything I've experienced on previous cars I owned. My M3 never came even close to this. None of the AWD SUVs my wife owned over the years (q5, lr disco, etc) either. It really felt like when I put my super duty in full diff lock. That said, I've not owned an AWD sports car with this wide a tire in the front before, so perhaps that's the experience that's new...

 

Corvettes are down right scary. You could literally lunge into something if you aren't careful. Super wide tires. My Porsche was bad too, but not like the Vette. It was unlike anything I've experienced.
Funny the different names people have come up with. Rennlisters refer to it as the "Acorn Effect."

 

Old tires (with a LOT of heat cycles) are more prone to this.
How many miles on your 2020? Are they UHP Summer tires (like P Zeros)?

 

Less than 4k on the car and tires. They are pzeroes, though they definitely don't perform like uhps.

 

Second the vote for "acorn effect" (which feels like your tires are rolling or skipping over acorns), which is worse in winter when sidewalls are coldest and least pliable. On a different vehicle, switching from Pirelli to Michelin made the problem go away entirely (different design/construction). it was also much more noticeable in reverse when backing out of the garage or parking space.

 

Same problem with my R AWD MY2017 and P Zero! With my new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S all perfect! The Michelins rubber is softer as the PZero...

Same issue here on stock Pirelli P-Zeros (2016 F-Type S), solved by changing to winter tires: Pirelli Sottozero. Tire skipping gone immediately. I had the same symptoms you describe, which would go away when the tires warmed up. I live in North Carolina and don't really need winter tires, but they came with a set of 20" Gyrodyne wheels I purchased used. Once I use up the Sottozeros, I'm putting Michelin Pilot Sports on the 20" Gyrodynes and an all-season tire on the 19" Propeller wheels. I plan to swap out for 3-4 months of the year when it gets cold.

 

Yes. I had the same on my 2017 SVR. Summer tyres when cold in car park. Lots of grinding and skipping when turning. I swapped for all seasons and all gone!
