Default TIL: Tirerack offers tire shaving

Got a puncture in one of my rears, and was resigned to swapping over to a set of Pzeros I have about.
I was going to call my local fitter and see if they could recommend any local shops that would shave tires, and decided to ping tirerack on the off chance they offered the service.
Surprisingly they do, and only 30 dollars for a 305/30-20.
I was also able to take advantage of tirerack's road hazard protection though I purchased the rears on closeout for 201 a piece and the replacement is 378.
So while it wont cover full replacement cost, it's a lot better than nothing.

I just wanted the info out there for others who get a rear puncture, or for AWD owners not keen on purchasing 4 new tires due to a puncture.

Why not just plug the puncture?

I must admit I am a little lost as I don't see the connection between a puncture and shaving the tyres.
Maybe it goes like this?:
1. Got a puncture
2. AWD so in theory need to replace all four tyres (but as Dan says why not just repair the puncture??? Maybe it's a bad one and the tyre is toast?)
3. Have four P-Zeros on hand (new or used we don't know)
4. P-Zeros = crap grip but shaving them a little might improve the grip (????).

I think rather than replacing all 4, or swapping to the P-Zeroes, he bought one shaved to match the wear on the other 3 of whatever’s on the car. Pretty obvious the puncture wasn’t repairable, or he would have repaired it!

Ah, that makes sense!
Forest and trees and all that.

Sorry all for the lack of clarification.

The puncture may or may not be repairable.
I did some quick googling and what I came away with is that tire manufacturer's say the speed rating goes away when patching a puncture.
I plan on doing some data logging as soon as I am back on the road to figure out why my 120-130mph interval increased.
So while that should not be overly stressing for the tires, and I am getting some stickier tires for track use, I don't want a nagging thought of a patched tire in the back of my mind.

I currently have Yokohama V601's on the car. They are worn to ~5/32 and offer a lot more grip than the Pzeros I have (on another set of rims).
I had these Pzeros on my car for about a week while I waited for a replacement for a cracked rim to arrive (2 attempts to repair the crack failed, Thanks NOLA Roads!)
While the Pzeros on my Dad's car were perfectly adequate (He did a couple of track days on them), the aged ones I currently have offer less than impressive traction.
While being able to kick the rear super far out on command is amusing, I don't yet have trust in the front end grip of those tires.
I will eventually put them on the car, and learn their handling characteristics, but want to enjoy the V601's until they are used up.

Cheers

Of course they do, they don't make any money from a repair. It's like a car company saying "Only use genuine parts at service" - you can use whatever you want, but they're not going to recommend you use aftermarket parts they don't make anything from. Unless you're tracking your car at the absolute limit, the speed rating means nothing to you anyway 🤷 I own 14 vehicles (mostly work trucks) and must have done hundreds of plug repairs as we probably puncture three or four tyres a month... the plugs usually outlast the tyre. On the track I wouldn't use a plugged tyre in a race, but I use plugged tyres in practice sessions... if I puncture a race tyre it just gets repaired and goes in the practice pile.

You've already done what you've done, but you know for next time

Good deal.

They likely will see some track use (but not competition), either being able to convince my Dad to get his 400 Sport back on track, or me stealing it to see what times I can turn in his car.
He had the decent Pzeros on his car, but after a road trip to MD in the winter decided maybe A/S's aren't so bad and bought some MP4 A/S's to put on his car.
Good tires, but I could see them chunking at the track.
