Default Discount Tire Comes Through Again....

With the annual state inspection due on my wife's 2006 XK8 next month, it is time to replace the car's 6.5-year-old Yokohama YK580 tires. Because this car now does less than 1,500 miles per year, I decided to go with a new set of Barum Bravuris 5HM all-season tires (245/40/19 front, 255/40/19 rear). Barum is a European subsidiary of Continental Tire, and the Bravuris 5HM is exclusive to Discount Tire. So I drove the car to my local store this morning with my 2015 tire receipts in hand, hoping I would get maybe $100 or so in pro-rated credit towards the new Barum tires. Lo and behold they qualified for a pro-rated credit of nearly $400. After all the math was done, the new set of four Barum Bravuris 5HM tires will cost me a grand total of $220 out-the-door. They were ordered this morning and should arrive by the first of next week....

This is one of numerous reasons why my local Discount Tire store continues to get all of our tire business. I have been dealing with them for more than 10 years and have always been treated with top-level pricing and service....

Jon,
I hope that I can have similar results with my 3HMs around summer 2024.I was glad to hear about your good fortune.

Thanks Gene. I am still wondering if their newfangled treadwear scanner made some sort of error. They have been using it for only a couple of months. I did not know there was such a device....

Because this car is now driven only 1,200 to 1,500 miles per year, I'm sure these Barum Bravuris 5HM tires will do just fine for our purposes (40,000-mile treadwear warranty, 98W front and 100W rear). I researched tires for months and my long-time Discount Tire store manager agrees with me that this tire will do well for us. He could have tried to steer me towards more expensive tires but he knows my wife's XK8 is now just a toy driven year-round but only in clear weather. If it was still her daily driver, I probably would have gone with either the General GMax AS-05 (relatively affordable) or the Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 Plus (more costly but owners really love them). I expect to continue to keep the fronts at 32 to 33 psi and the rears at 28 to 29 psi. That is the sweet spot for optimum treadwear longevity with the Yokohama YK580 tires I have been running since we purchased the car in early February 2012. That Yokohama model (exclusive to Discount Tire) was discontinued several years ago. They have been great tires for us and I was disappointed to learn that they were no longer available....

Update:

The new Barum Bravuris 5HM tires were mounted on the rims, Hunter road force balanced, and installed late yesterday afternoon. Dramatic improvement in performance, grip, ride, comfort, noise, etc. just as expected whenever a set of 6.5-year-old tires gets replaced. The car is scheduled for a fresh alignment later on this morning (it was last aligned in late September 2019). After that it should be ready for the annual state inspection due in February....

Update:

Been running these new 19-inch staggered Barum Bravuris 5HM tires for about three weeks now and still very happy with them. They Hunter road force balanced easily, they do not flat-spot after sitting for several days, the handling is precise, the ride comfort is excellent, and the road noise is low. Because this car is just a toy, it stays safely at home in the rain and snow so I may never be able to offer a wet-weather performance report. Thanks to the Discount Tire proration policy applied to the car's previous set of Yokohama YK580 tires, these Barums are the best set of $220 tires I have ever had....

Thanks for the feedback. The Bravuris is available over here (at least, the smaller ones) and I have them happily on the three small cars. Never thought of them for the Jag. The Michelin PS4s were around 5x that price here

But they're good, thankfully..

"Big" Jon89....

You have done well! The Barum's are as good as any of the more expensive Tires....If you don't plan to Road Race or use them on the Track.....For the use you have mentioned, they are probably too good.....If a Tire can be too good!

I found these tires at a Discount Tire near me and they are the same size for my '06, but they are $250 for 2 of them. Are they really that much cheaper in NC ?

Read my posts carefully. I took advantage of Discount Tire's proration program against the previous set of Yokohama tires I had purchased from them. Had I paid full retail price, the new tires would have been approximately $125 each plus mounting and sales taxes....

I always utilize their proration program whenever possible. I did so on my previous 2005 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 (twice), my current 2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R, and I will do so within the next 12 to 18 months on my wife's 2015 Lexus RX350. My local store manager has been extremely generous with me for the past decade, and that is one reason why I take a giant platter of my wife's homemade ham biscuits to his store around Christmas time every year....

Jon89...It all has to do with the Quality of the Sales Person......In my case, I drove in as I had a leak and wanted a repair.....(Continentals)..The Sales Person immediately gaged my Tire (The one that was low) and told me they could not repair it as the Tread was too worn.... but didn't mention the guarantee and the possible replacement to a like Tire or to a Barums...He was too interested in selling me a couple of new Connie's....Consequently, I left in a huff and bought New Connie's at the Competitor's @ about $250.00 apiece....I wound up with what I wanted but with a little help from the Service Attendant, I could have saved $500.00.. I get a little cranky sometimes....and this was one of those times! Cost me a bunch
