Smile TPMS sensor replacement (final word) Tire Rack

Hi All,
One of the things I have learned in all of the sportscars I have owned over the years and searching through car forums for information is that there are a lot of "rabbit holes" you can go down to try and get the answer to a question!
There are those posts that are spot on, "this is what I have learned" posts that have factual and helpful information and then there are those that start out with an owners question of "how do I do this?" which is followed by a flury of replys of which a lot will take you down that rabbit hole of waisted time and money not to mention frustration!
Been there and done that! In fact just did it again on this topic on this very forum.
My 2015 F-Type recently had the TMPS failure message so I deduced by the age that the TPMS sensors batteries were at end of life. The reason we all come to these forums is to avoid going to the dealership and paying for their future showroom remodel or the owner's new jet
So, I come here, use the search feature on the forum and start reading. There is of course; what to buy? , where to buy?, how to get what you bought, to work. I followed one of the "what to buy and where to buy suggestions" which took me to an aftermarket TPMS sensor which could be found on Ebay. Took them to Discount tire and had them installed (and yes, they were the correct frequency) ... which was actually one of the more helpful threads on the forum.
My F-Type did not like these sensors, would not calibrate. So... back to the forum of how to calibrate as the owners manual was worthless and a call to the dealership was like calling your health provider to ask why your back end hurts? (answer; they don't know)
I read everything from :" put a strong magnet near each TMPS sensor and it will put it into learning mode" to "drive the car for 50 miles at 19MPH" to" push the reset button under the steering wheel" (answer: there is no reset button under the wheel...feel dumb for even looking). I drove the car for weeks, purchased a $200 Jaguar/Landrover scanning/reading unit (which I wanted anyways for other reasons so don't judge me), this also would not work. THEN... I found one small post that was a needle in a mountain high haystack of TMPS information that said, " buy the TMPS sensor from Tire Rack. It is a fraction of the cost and they work." So,,, I did and they arrived and they were branded Jaguar/Landrover (a good sign) took them to Discount Tire and had them installed. The tech brought my car around and said, "we couldn't get them to program with our tool." and my heart sank. He then said, "Wait 24 hours and then drive the car tomorrow, I have done these Jags before and they are tempermental and this seems to work." Cool, I thought. The next day I started the car and the TMPS warning came up, the small tire light was blinking (as all the times before) and I drove. Within three miles the light went off and the car had learned the new sensors.
It may be a coincidence but just then, the clouds parted and a ray of light came down. A full rainbow could be seen for miles and that new car small suddenly came back.
Hope this helps someone on their journey.

Thanks for this. TPMS alerted me to a nail in tire back in August (since resolved, Tire Rack’s warranty almost paid for the new tire, after 22 months). Now I’m getting the TPMS system fault, so time for new sensors.

Mine were all new and the shop that installed them in the new wheels couldn't read them with his handheld tool to (turn them on). I told him to go ahead anyway, brought the wheels home, and installed them this morning. On my test drive I set the dash to display pressures and it showed previous values. The readings dropped to zero within one mile, and within another mile all four were showing the new values. Sweet! It's nice when something "just works."

Well, my TPMS sensors died last fall, so I’ve had the ‘TPMS system fault display’ since then. The dealer replaced the sensors with C2D47173 a week ago and was unable to get them to work. The tech tried resetting the module 3 times, driving it after each. No joy. I’ve driven it over 100 miles since then, and tried disconnecting the battery. That turned off the warning for 5 miles, but it came back on. Now I get to leave on a 2000 mile road trip without TPMS or a spare.

You might find it's the TPMS control module, not the sensors. Unlikely that all sensors die at the same time. That module seems to be prone to failure. I replaced the one on my XF (under passenger seat). Cost about $100 and a plug and play swap (no coding required). Maybe the same here?

I used VDO/Continental TPMS sensors - 315 mHz p/n SE52029 from RockAuto @ $45 ea. Supposedly these are OEM. They didn't require any activation or programming.

Interesting. The Internet claims the ones the dealer installed are 433MHz. I let the dealer do it as they should know which frequency to use.

It acted like batteries were dying. After it started failing last fall, it stopped failing for a day or two with warmer weather, or maybe just one wheel failed. My original sensors were over 9 years old last fall when the failed, so I just assumed batteries.

Mine were still working but I have had the batteries die after 8-9 years so I replaced them proactively last year when I had the new MPS4S tires installed.

The frequency was changed from 315 to 433 during the 2015 MY. New aftermarket sensors now often include both frequencies so they cover 99% of vehicles.

The dealer said there was a ‘catalog error’, and that they indeed should have installed the 315MHz instead of 433MHz. Whee.

Is there a way to disable the system? If only temporarily, until I purchase new tires or something...

I really don't want to dismount 4 new tires to fix this issue.

2017 V6s convertible.
