I badly wanted a red F-Type convertible. I live in New Zealand and there are very few here. I looked into wrapping but chose to wait, about two years. I have finally found a 2016 in Japan, it will be here in a few days after waiting for nearly 2 months. Only 19,000ks, genuine.
It has been serviced by the importing dealer, but I will change the transmission oil, can any of you tell me about anything I should have done?
Best regards to you all for 2016, TrevorD, from New Zealand. PS, I am 87 this year, still young enough to drive a F-Type.
Good evening/morning Trevor, since you are on the other side of the world! Good on you for still pursuing sports cars at the young age of 87! I would actually worry less about the transmission fluid at that mileage and be more concerned about the various coolant pipes that could fail at the seams. These are generally replaced with aluminum units to prevent that from happening again. If they have not been replaced yet, then you should have them rectified. The y-pipe, crossover pipe, water pump and thermostat are the common failure points. Mine were all done at 36k miles when I purchased it a year ago.
Thank you Rianf1. I most certainly will have a look at the water hoses. I will soon know. We are fortunate to have Beacham's who restore Jaguars worldwide in our town. They know Jaguars extremely well. I will get them to do the job if it hasn't been done already.
If there is anyone out there who has any other suggestions, I am all ears. This car cost more than I have ever spent on a car so I intend to look after it. I was a motor mechanic about 40 years ago; however I don't do any work on my cars now, not my current 2009 XK. PS, I will be keeping my XK, totally different cars. It will be interesting to see which I like the best. Perhaps horses for courses.
They are really pretty reliable cars, I'd go over the normal plastic cooling system parts and check for any oil leaks, but in general they are great to drive and enjoy. Front/rear diff oils at this age are probably a good idea, but diff failures are rare anyway.
Congrats @TrevorD ! I'm 70 years old and bought a 2016 salsa red convertible what's 45,000 MI a little over a year ago and I've been loving it ever since. Of course I've been updating it over the past year which includes a repaint on the front bonnet and I just had ppf applied to the hood and nose and replace the front grill with an aftermarket P7 grill which I think looks much better. You're going to have a lot of fun with the car!
I love your car, as I am sure I will love mine. It will sit in my garage next to my red XK. If I am not out hooning. I am unsure what is ppf. Could you explain. is that to prevent stone chips?
I won't do the grill job you did, I kinda like to keep my cars original. My top is grey, I will consider blackening like yours if I can find someone to do it here. My wheels are black which I love, yep, lots of cleaning. I see yours are aftermarket.
PPF Is Paint Protection Film a clear layer over the paint that does help keep the chips off the paint. The cost her in Seattle US was $1,400 USD. Also my wheels are Jaguar OEM, the Gyrodyne alloys. If you get a good canvas soft top conditioner applied, that should darkent it down a bunch
Nice car and you will find all the help you need right here!
With a 2016, some of the issues have been 'stickiness' on the surface of some of knobs and controls. You can do a search, but I think denatured alcohol does remove it. Do test it on a hidden area before using, if that is an issue for you.
Check the operation of the center vent. It should raise and lower quietly, no gear grinding
If the supercharger oil has not been replaced, that should be done. JLR says it's good for 100,000 miles, but now age is a concern.
Listen for any squeaking of the vacuum valves in the rear that are part of the Active Exhaust system. Not sure if it applies in your part of the world, but there is here in US, warranty replacement, even past the 5 year standard warranty.
Check for microcracking in the headlight lenses. The cracks can diffuse the light, not only lessening your ability to see on a dark road, but also may blind oncoming drivers. I had to have my 2017s HLs replaced for this reason. They are pricey if new, but used ones could have the same problem. The microcracking CANNOT be polished out.
Wonderful to read that you have a quality repair facility, not the case everywhere!
and age only matters if you are a wine, a cheese or a violin!!!
Hi Valerie. Thank you for all your advice, I have booked it in to my mechanic next week. Just to be sure, do you know Jaguar's recommendation for the supercharger oil? Cheers
