Default Tunnel blasting and Decible readings - Edmunds

Looks like Edmunds did some sound tests. Interesting results. These are measured from inside the car. Mentions that the R Coupe registered 101.4 dB with the windows down. I imagine it is quite insane in the convertibles.

Tunnel Blasting and Decibel Readings - 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Long-Term Road Test

dB @ Idle | dB @ "Full Throttle" | dB @ 70mph

45.1 | 84.4 | 67.3 - 2015 F-Type R Coupe
43.4 | 88.4 | 64.6 - 2015 F-Type S Coupe
51.8 | 94.8 | 67.6 - 2015 Corvette Z06
52.7 | 83.8 | 69.3 - 2014 911 Turbo S
39.3 | 69.5 | 59.9 - 2015 Kia K900

Interesting, so if I'm reading that correctly they're showing the V6 as louder than the V8 at full throttle.

Yup that's what they were reading. The V6 does put out a higher tone, wonder if that makes it louder?

Higher frequency means more energy, so...

The extra noise of the V6S is generated by the screaming of the driver when they can't catch up to the F Type R pulling away in front of them !

Or the sound deadening in the V6 is not as good. Why would they measure inside the cabin, what is the point? We're they looking for the most quite one while driving through a tunnel?

Sorry not able to embed on this device, maybe somebody else can do this for me.

I would imagine because that's the only sound that a driver/passenger experiences as pleasure or pain for those not so inclined. It's certainly the only exhaust sound I care about. I'm not into standing around in parking lots listening to engines rev.

Do you really think it's likely that JLR put extra interior sound deadening in the V8?

Not sure I put too much stock in those numbers. I guess we don't know how they tested or what they did, but having driven in, been driving with and witnessed drive-bys from all F Type models, the V8 always seems to sound the loudest by some margin. As you would expect, the order was pretty much V6, V6S, V8. Also, to suggest as the article does that the V8R is quieter at full throttle than the 991 Turbo S is close to asinine - I know a few guys with the Turbo S, and all love the car but are unhappy with the exhaust note and volume.

Not that his methods are infallible but there aren't too many comparisons that use the same equipment, same day, same tunnel for some audio measurements. Can anyone post a comparison that someone else has done?

It would be nice to know where he put the SPL meter for all the tests. My guess would be the center of the cabin.

Actually I just remembered that I have a clip of me going through that exact tunnel that they used. I recorded the exhaust from the outside though. I'll upload the clip to youtube.

Here it is. Not that it really adds anything to debate, but it is still fun.

This isn't actually true.
Loudness is flatly measured by decibel/sound pressure level (db/spl). However, perceived magnitude of a sound differs for different frequencies. Humans have a range of hearing from 20z to 20,000z and we are most sensitive to frequencies in the 3-4k range, hence we generally perceive those frequencies more 'loudly'. eg. That frequency range includes that of a 'baby crying' and so we theorize as to whether all humans have been born with that sensitivity or whether it is a result of human conditioning (survivalism) over time....

Having said all that, it is unlikely that the V6 is louder than the V8.

The Eurotopia forum also puts together some 30-40 car runs as well, and those are a lot of fun.

I'd love to hear that R in the canyons!

I really enjoy this tunnel under the National Mall in Washington, DC almost every day. Of course, it's only filled with people when closed for special occasions. This one goes under the Capitol dome.

Even a base F-Type makes a deafening roar in there, which I enjoy almost every day, and it's particularly incredible with the top down.

I'm a group leader for the Eurotopian drives. Been with them from the beginning over 2 years ago when I had my TT-RS.

We actually started a smaller group as that one has gotten a bit unorganized and too large. Cars & Canyons if you are interested. That is actually the group behind me in the posted video from our last run.

Otherwise I head up on weekends too if I just want a quick drive.

That's awesome! I think I remember your TT-RS from the run where a lady in a CRV chased us down and yelled at us at the bottom of Tuna Canyon. I was in the CLK63 Black Series with Forgestar wheels. I would love to join in on a Cars & Canyons run with you guys, do you post the info on Eurotopia?
