If you look back above at my post # 16, in the box graphic, it cautions you to be careful with entering the VIN so as not to connect it to the 'wrong' car.
I believe this supports my assumption.
I read that differently. It cautions against "locking the purchase" to the wrong car. The software on the USB (the "purchase") is locked to the VIN. Again, the effect is the same, and it needs to be resolved through the vendor.
Steve, it sounds like your system has similar updating to my ‘14 - order an update, and they send you a USB drive with an update on it matched to your VIN.
What Valerie is describing is how it works for my ‘18 XE with ICTP. I bought mine new, but I never downloaded an update successfully, though I don’t remember quite why. I have an ICTP account, but my vague memory is I needed to create another account and had issues doing it. Never followed up on it.
In the research I did, it was apparent that there are different Infotainment units with different methodologies for updating the NAV. Some cars have an SD card port and use a special (in some cases) SD card for that update. Some use USB, and some use USB that can be bought updated. I did see an entry where, yes, you bought the USB appropriate for your car and had at it.
The interesting thing here is that I also have InControl Remote. At first it took me a bit to understand that Remote and Nav are two different things in terms of account and log in. I was able to connect my car to the Remote. The InControl remote app required my VIN because that app communicates with my car and my car communicates with it. Remote is a subscription service for a fee after the 5 th year. I paid the $70 for a year try it out.
Once you log in to Remote (for this car) it shows you where it is on a graphic that is like a line-drawing map. It shows the outline of my house and a marker that shows where the car is. Other menus in this app allow remote starting, tell you the status of the car,( windows up/down, doors locked/unlocked, etc.)
If the car is in the home garage, I can have a device with the app on it with me and I can bring up the app. It then shows a black dot which is me/my device/app and where I am in relation to the car. For example, the car was in the home garage earlier in the week. I went to the dealer (about 15 miles away) Changing the map size allowed me to be able to see me in relation to the car. Other users have cited where they have used the Remote app from home to see if the dealer has done anything with their car in terms of moving it from the parking lot in to the shop for service. It's also a great tracking device if the car was ever stolen, or if you are trying to find it in the dark when too far away to have the fob work for the lights. So, there is obviously two-way communication going on. The car tells me/the app where it is, for example, and, I can remotely up the windows or fiddle with the locks. That communication has to use some sort of locater associated with the VIN to know the correct car.
It seems that the "enablement" for this communication may be housed in an encrypted file called Vehicle Secret Services. It's how cellphone companies do things with cars and is not accessible to vehicle owners. I'm sure there's more to VSS. It's probably like the hives that are used in the registry for Windows OSs.
This link is for a similar issue with newer Jaguars that use PIVI, but I think it boils down to the same kind of thing.
Your car is equipped with the "Infotainment system type NGI (new generation infotainment) Head Unit - High". New for 2018 I guess, it was essentially the base version with the buttons on the sides of screen (in control touch - NOT PRO). That version has limited capability from the outset, it was never meant to function with WIFI or Apple Carplay etc, just has a digital radio receiver in it and basic bluetooth connectivity etc. If you are looking for Carplay or Android auto you would need to go aftermarket for that type of connectivity.
"Your car is equipped with the "Infotainment system type NGI (new generation infotainment) Head Unit - High". New for 2018"
Thank you for taking your time to research this for me with your dealer. Alas, my car is a 2017 and was built in late 2016, so I doubt a 2018 Infotainment system was put in.
Here is how I know I have InControlTouchPlus. Pro seems to be the later version with capability to use Carplay and Android Auto.
One has the choice of two different systems as pictured. The top one takes you to the SD card process... not what I have.
The bottom one takes you to USB process, which IS what I have in the console. Continuing from that page takes you to the log in page. I do have a log in, and then it askes for the VIN. It won't accept my VIN, so dead in the water.
I really don't care that the Infotainment system I have can't use Apple Carplay or Android Auto. All I'm trying to do is update the current Nav info.
Thank you for trying to help. I WILL get it sorted out!

About updating your Nav. We're at the same place. After finding out that there's no way to upgrade my system via WIFI my Maintenance Manager asked, "what is it that you want to do?" My answer was "Just Update the Nav". To which he replied, "we can do that here" Since we have different versions I'm not sure they can do yours, but it's worth asking.
It sounds to me like there's some issue with the recognition of your VIN on JLR's or Here's side. It should be as simple as described - input the VIN, download the latest map update to a USB stick and install it. Fingers crossed that the dealer will solve it.
A bit OT because it concerns MY18 and ICTP but there seems to be some confusion here about the infotainment systems and a weird answer from Feral's dealer...
All MY18 cars came with In Control Touch Pro and an 8" screen with physical buttons on the sides. There was no base version - all cars came with the full fat "Pro" system with all available features including wifi hotspot functionality, over the air software updates (of the system software, not navigation though), weather updates, music streaming through built in apps for Spotify etc. Everything except CarPlay/AA which they for some reason never got working with that hardware. There was actually one system update which included CarPlay/AA but it didn't work so that feature was removed in a later update. A bit later the 10" screen without physical buttons was introduced. That also ran the same In Touch Control Pro system with exactly the same features except that CarPlay/AA worked.
There was never any possibility to update anything via wifi. The only thing that could be updated wirelessly was the system software, provided that you had an additional data SIM card in the car. The over the air updates stopped coming a couple of years ago when they stopped developing the system. I guess the amount of map data in each update from Here was too large to be feasible to run over a 4G SIM card in the car and therefore was only available via USB stick based updates. From memory each monthly update used to be some 40-50 GB, at least here in Europe where the map data weirdly only came in a huge package including all of Russia and some surrounding far away East European countries.
I stopped updating the satnav maps when my subscription ran out because it's a bit useless and overpriced, especially if one can run CarPlay. The built in satnav is still a good backup solution though and since I still have a SIM card in the car I still get google maps style live satellite imagery from Here in the satnav, which doesn't require any active subscription.

From the US MY18 brochure:
Thank you both for all your help. This is for a MY2017 Premium, built late 2016. This car also has the upgrade Meridian 770. The infotainment things changed, I believe for 2018, using PIVI???????
Yes, it is a VIN entry issue. After hours spent with HERE and Jaguar and them pointing fingers at each other, I am no farther ahead.
Yes, my JLR tech said that he could do it, but then reported back that when he tried, he couldn't get there either. Since he didn't have the car when he tried, I'm sure he went in with the VIN and I'm thinking that whatever is holding me up, held HIM up, but you'd think that a dealer would get in over and above any 'commoner'
After reading through the TSBs I linked in above posting, I think it has something to do with the NAV not being enabled, much like the interior blue lighting in my car was not enabled. Tech had to drill down while connected to the car to access some module that controls it.
Yes some things changed with the MY18 facelift but as far as I know In Control Touch Pro is the last type of infotainment system in F-Types and Pivi (Pro) was never available in any F-Type. Pivi is JLR's next generation system with a bigger screen which they introduced in the facelifted XF, F-Pace etc.
Anyhow your issue sounds like a dealer job which they hopefully can sort out once they have the car.
Valerie - you might check with https://here.navigation.com/home/en_US/HERENA/USD. This is where Jaguar sent me regarding my 2015.
I updated the NAV map last year (2024) via the USB. It took about 2 hours to update.
Notes:
-The last (ever) map available for my NAV (Incontrol Touch Plus; Jaguar Gen 2.1) is a 2020 map. The head unit in my car ("8" inch, hard buttons, USB port only) is no longer supported by Jag & its software developers - so the 2020 map and software update is the last one.
-I purchased the NAV map & software upgrade from: https://here.navigation.com/home/en_US/HERENA/USD They still charge the full $199 even though it's an outdated map.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPDATING THE NAVIGATION MAP DATA WITH THE USB STICK
THE MAP UPDATE TAKES APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS TO FULLY UPLOAD TO THE SYSTEM.
DURING THIS TIME THERE WILL BE:
NO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY
NO NAVIGATION
NO USE OF TELEPHONE FUNCTIONS
The engine must be running during this time to prevent shutdown or power drop which could result in a failed download.
Further to this, at any time the upload is in progress it is OK to shut down the car or restart the car BUT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST THE USB STICK BE REMOVED FROM THE USB SLOT.
On shutdown or restart the update will resume from the last known position and continue to download until it is completed providing no removal has taken place.
At any point should the onscreen instruction “Map Update Has Paused” appear, press cancel to continue the update.
PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION IN THE ORDER THAT FOLLOWS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW IN THIS ORDER MAY RESULT IN A MAP UPLOAD FAILURE WHICH IS NOT RECOVERABLE AND WILL REQUIRE THE NEED FOR A REPLACEMENT MODULE. I
• Turn on engine and leave the engine running for the duration of download.
• Insert the USB stick containing the Navigation map data into the slot marked as USB and DO NOT
REMOVE the USB stick under any circumstances until advised by the instructions on the touch screen.
• Watch the touch screen and follow the instructions as shown.
• Enter the Map License code.
(DURING THE UPDATE PLEASE BE AWARE THERE WILL BE NO FUNCTIONAL ACCESS TO THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM AT ALL EXCEPT FOR INSTRUCTIONS SHOWN ON THE TOUCH SCREEN WHICH MUST BE FOLLOWED).
• During the map upload process IF the ignition is switched off and the vehicle is shutdown,
providing the USB stick IS NOT removed the upload will continue on the next vehicle start up.
• Once the map updating is completed a message is displayed on the touch screen.
• Press “OK” to restart the navigation system and then immediately remove the USB stick from the
interface.
THE NEXT STEPS ARE CRUCIAL TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING THE MAP UPLOAD AND MUST BE ADHERED TO. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN AN INCOMPLETE UPLOAD AND LOSS OF NAVIGATION FUNCTIONALITY.
• ALLOW A MINIMUM OF 3 MINUTES FOR THE NAVIGATION TO RESTART.
• ONCE THE NAVIGATION HAS RESTARTED TURN THE ENGINE OFF.
• EXIT THE VEHICLE, LOCK IT AND LEAVE IT FOR A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES BEFORE RE-ENTERING AND TURNING THE IGNITION ON.
UPON FOLLOWING THE ABOVE STEPS AS REQUIRED THE NAVIGATION MAP SHOULD NOW BE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED. IT MAY BE REQUIRED TO UPDATE FAVORITE LOCATIONS OR ROUTES.
I spent the better part of a week with the HERE group. After explaining my situation, including having only USB, they responded with directions for an SD card. I also explained that their site would not accept my VIN. The responded with needing to know if I had the required 64 gb flash drive for the download. I reiterated that their site wouldn't accept my VIN, so why did it matter at that point if I had a 64 gb???? It was obvious to me that they were just bots and knew nothing about what they were doing.
Did talk to my JLR tech. He offered to look in to it. He reported back that he couldn't get the nav upgrade with my VIN either. I hate imposing on his kindness, so have not checked back as yet.
In the scheme of things, for me the remote subscription for $70 USD a year has more utility. The existing Nav Data is OK. I live in an area of Wisconsin that doesn't add new roads or routes and we don't take that car on long distance trips. It hasn't sent me the wrong way for the times that I have used it. I just thought it would be good to get an update since the car is going on 8 years old. I am ever hopeful a breakthrough will come.
I think you need to phone JLR corporate to reconfirm your ownership registration is recorded correctly, to clear up the VIN error. Only then will HERE be able to help you.

Thank you very much for posting all these instructions. I appreciate your help.
The ISSUE REMAINS!
To be able to do ANY of this, you have to enter the car's VIN
I have a log in, I get logged in, I go to the Maps and Services page and then it asks for the VIN
I enter my correct VIN, and the page/site says to enter a VALID VIN.
No matter what route I take to get to the HERE site and Maps and Services, I continue to be blocked by "ENTER A VALID VIN"
Thank you Ramart, I have already spoken with JLR, about a year ago, who updated my ownership information. With that I was able to log in to the INCONTROL site and purchase the Remote app. It is currently active and running on the car. REMOTE also would have needed a correct VIN for me to be able to see my car and if it is locked, asleep etc. It is possible that the corrected ownership info is not at HERE, but the people at HERE continue to respond with strategies for an SD card equipped car, rather than my USB equipped car, so I don't have much faith in them at this point.
I have an appt Feb. 19,2025 and have corresponded with my Tech. I really do think it's something within the car, the VSS, due to the TSBs that were issued for similar NAV issues.
2017 F has been at the dealer for a week. Tech has been in touch with Jaguar, HERE round and round. Jaguar says it's a HERE issue. Smart Aleck on HERE phone call said I have to log in on the car's log in screen. He just kept repeating that when I told him I don't seem to have a log in screen, and ignored me when I asked him why I can't add my VIN to the Maps and SErvices page.
I'm going to restart this discussion under a different title... "need help with 2017 connectivity" and see what goes on there.
Presumably the maps are Jaguar specific but not car specific . The VIN is only for access. Once downloaded by someone they should just be able to send you a copy. No idea if this will work but putting it out there for your consideration.
Thank you... yes, possible. However on the " add your vehicle" page, you are specifically cautioned to add a correct VIN so that you don't link the map update to the wrong vehicle. Unless I'm not interpreting this right, someone else's update wouldn't work in my car.

The updates I've done have been keyed to the VIN so that it would not be possible to share. This is to protect their revenue. It's unfortunate that some can't even manage to convince them to take her money. I'm still convinced it's a problem with HERE and their website but until she gets this resolved it's just an educated guess.
It sounds like you need another contact at HERE as the one you have does not appear to have a clue how to resolve the problem. I have found this when contacting other companies and agencies. If you think you are getting a line of BS from them hang up and call back. The next person you talk to may be able to solve your problem.
