V8 S vs R Differences

Default V8 S vs R Differences

Hi everyone. I just sold a mustang Boss Laguna Seca and am looking into the F-Type.

Iam am trying to find a comprehensive list of differences between the V8S and R. I will most likely buy used and in my area the R is $15-$20k above the V8S.

Does a list exist somewhere? I tried searching but couldn't get the right combination of words.

The V8S is RWD, the R is AWD and gets a bonus 55hp from a better tune.

In the alphabet, S comes after R, but in Jaguar speak it comes before.

S is RWD with published rate at 488 / 495 hp.
R is AWD with published rate 550 hp

R weighs more than S due to AWD.
R takes less oil than S due to AWD interfering with the oil pan.
R has a different hood (bonnet) since the AWD causes the engine to sit a bit higher.

I think that the S has hydraulic PS while the R has electric.

S only available in 2014/15 (2013 in the UK)

If you like tail happy, get an S. If you want the absolute best straight line speed bragging rights, get and R. But they are really very comparable vehicles and you won't disappointed with either. For $20k I'd get an S even though it might be a year or two older.

So if I was going to do the MobileECUTuning, a V8 S would be the way to go then. It ends at 618 vs 630 with an R to start.

A slight hitch to the story: the 2015 R was RWD with the 550 hp rating.
Also, the V8S and R have the same engine, different tune. Velocity AP can offer you an R, SVR and even hotter tune for the V8S (for not much money), so take advantage of the lower cost of the V8S.

So there are no other differences between S and R? I know there are brake differences between the V6 S and R.

I just need to research VAP, MECUT, and others. I'm in Houston TX so there are quite a few used within a few hundred miles.

Just need to find some locals to chat with and maybe ride with to feel it out.

V8S & R, same brakes (super performance), different color calipers (black & red, respectively). The V6S could/can be optioned with the same brakes.

The most obvious difference has been missed so far.
The V8S was convertible only, so if you must have a V8 coupe then it's R (or SVR) or nothing.

Almost no other differences. Slight styling changes happened with the 17s. The rest of the differences you will have to look at with used ones are just cantered around the options that were chosen. Engines, transmission, suspension all the same. Brake packages might be different but again that's a preference issue.

Good point. I just assumed Jabooh was looking for a vert.

As Unhinged points to, it's model year dependent.

Up to MY15 the V8s is the only v8 RWD Vert. The RWD R is a coupe.

Neither exist as a current model.

The only real diff as I understand it were Torque vector braking & hydro vs. elec steering.

Once you get into MY16+, the R is AWD and needs the extra HP to make up for the AWD.

Also, in MY16, I think they changed the instrument display.

That said, I keep learning new and nuanced things about the cars. It's hard to find a line item list.

Or you could go with the SVR/575hp?? Ahh but you're looking for a used one. The V8 S is probably best bang for for the buck if you want a V8. Have you been by Momentum/Jaguar of Southwest Houston? Worked there for 8 years, they usually have a pretty good assortment of used vehicles. You could get a test drive out of it at least to get an idea of what they are like if you're not happy with pricing.

I would go V8 S. It's almost as fast, same motor, mod-friendly, and hydraulic steering.

But if you don't want a convertible, then tough cookies!

R had an electric locking differential option anailable in early RWD models, don't think you could get the e-diff in an S.
big difference for me was no LSD in the base models, I wanted a locking differential. So I ordered the V6-S

I'm pretty sure even the base has a LSD. As DJS said, the V8s & R does come standard with EAD.

The LSD on the base is not standard. I don't believe it is even available as an option.

To add to the above;

- to compare "apples to apples" the only mechanical difference between a 2015 V8R RWD 'vert and a 2014 V8S is the swap from hydraulic to electric power assist steering.....I wanted the hydraulic but time has proven that the electric is just as good.

- as far as power goes, the 488/495hp V8S is running 510PS software so the real difference between the V8S and V8R is less than advertised.

- as Unhinged stated; VAP has inexpensive tunes to take a V8S to the R 550hp, the P7/SVR 575hp level or their own 605hp tune.


Obviously if you want AWD or a coupe, the V8S is out.
