Default VAP 8-Speed Transmission Tuning -

Hello all,

Last weekend I test drove 2021 P450 RWD and a R. I loved both cars and P450 is most likely going to be my next car. One thing I wished could be better was the transmission. I currently own a 2020 Z4 M40i and coming from that car, I thought 8-speed in both P450 and R were not as fast and crisp, especially the manual downshifts(it was identical between both cars btw). There was that typical automatic lag when I wanted to downshift, even in the dynamic mode. I did some research and looks VAP has a transmission tune. Does anyone have any experience with that? Does that tune make a significant difference for manual downshifts and upshifts? Thanks!!

Well...First thing that is interesting is I am pretty sure the z4 M40i has a ZF 8HP 70 (or 51?) HIS - Which is the exact same transmission as the F-type Automatics. Other than a potential varied shift strategy they are identical.

I have the VAP TCU tune as well as a bunch of other stuff on my F-Type R AWD. It does improve the shift points, and shifts quicker, and more inline with engine revs. Also, with their tuning package it allows an additional 200 RPM on top end.

Yep, you misunderstood it.
The VAP page here: https://www.velocityap.com/product/j...ission-tuning/
says:

THIS PRODUCT IS COMPATIBLE WITH ALL NON-FLEXRAY JLR ZF8HP70 EQUIPPED VEHICLES (XF, XE, XJ, FPACE, FTYPE, RANGE ROVER, RANGE ROVER SPORT, DISCOVERY/LR4) FITTED WITH 3.0 OR 5.0 SUPERCHARGED ENGINES. VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FLEXRAY VEHICLE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE MPVI2.

FLEXRAY:

2017-ON MY LAND ROVER PRODUCTS

2019-ON JAGUAR PRODUCTS

THERE ARE SOME ANOMOLIES/EXCEPTIONS TO THE ABOVE MODEL YEAR BREAKS, IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF YOU HAVE A FLEXRAY VEHICLE OR NOT, YOU CAN SEND US A PICTURE OF THE LABEL ON YOUR CAR’S ECU, LOCATED UNDER THE COWL AT THE BASE OF THE DASH.

So not compatible with the F-Type from 2019 on (I assume that means MY2019) which means your 2017 is good to go.

Hello,
I am assuming that I can restore the gearbox to its original state with this tool?

Yes, it surprised me as well. BMW did a great job tuning that 8 speed ZF. In comfort mode you don't feel much difference between Z4 and F-type but when Z4 is in Sport+ mode, it really shifts (up and down) close to double clutch levels and still remains very comfortable whereas F-type in dynamic mode just felt slightly lazy and laggy comparatively (especially manual down-shifts).

Do we know if the VAP TCU works on models 2021+?

Yes. Not sure which platform they are currently using, but they were (and likely are) still using the MPVI2 HP Tuner tool. You can flash your OEM shift strategy or the tuned one. For your first TCU flash/tune, you need 4 credits for the HP Tuner device. VAP includes those credits with their tune. Once you flash it, you can go back and forth as many times as you like, and do NOT need anymore credits to do so. Only need more credits to use HP Tuner to flash other/different tunes.

Probably listed on their (VAP) site. Or email Stuart or Chris from VAP. On the shifts...mine could not be any faster unless it read my mind....No delay at all. Coming from 22+ Porsches and 5 BMW's I can say this shifts as fast or faster than any I have had (With the tune....Do not recall before, as I did a bunch of updates at once).

Thanks, that's very encouraging. I assume you are speaking to manual downshifts and upshifts? After the VAP TCU, are they pretty instantaneous after you pull the pedals?

Have you some other tuning things from VAP? I think you have also a Update of your ECU Software in combination of TCU Tuning?
What is your feeling with the new TCU Softwaren? I have also ordered the HP Tuner und TCU Update, hope it will be working good in my Cat :-)

I did get the VAP pulley, ECU and TCU tune at the same time. The redline has increased, the shift points are more comfortable and low to mid torque increase makes this car drive so much better. I’m very happy with the results but I still want to it be a bit faster.

I wonder how VAP TCU tune compares to SVR OEM TCU settings which I heard are step up vs. "standard" R
