Default Where is the memory of a seat stored?

I am wondering if it is possible to swap from non-memory seats to memory seats. If I change also the door control module, would that work?
Someone once told me, that you cannot do it, but did not explain why. I am not sure where the position / memory is stored, or if this would require additional coding.
Thank you

I have base seats and looked into upgrading, found out the cost of programming at the dealer and never thought twice again about doing it again, it was that expensive.
They have to be programmed and so does about every other option, think there are two or three that do not need programming. Trust me, it would be cheaper to just get another one with the options.

Thank you. I have researched this quite extensively and it seems this is the hardest part of all - going from non memory to memory. If you have base seats with memory, you can swap to performance with memory no problem (within the correct generation of seats).
