Try cycling through the desktop processes. It often hides underneath the "launch IDS" screen. Alt-Tab is one way to do it.

Has anyone used these guys? Looks like they are selling the Mongoose for $100 less than Drew Technologies. I'm wondering if they are a reputable firm or if its worth it to buy direct from Drew.

I will try BackRev to XP SP2

My XP is running on Oracal VirtualBox which I understand other users are using with no problems.

I also understand that IDS will only work with VCM and not Monggose, so SDD is the only way.

I just looked on DrewTech's website, $599 at both locations, so not sure what you're seeing jagboi.

No.

With the newer versions on either VCM or Mongoose, the screen opens with SDD. If your vehicle is not supported under SDD, then SDD launches IDS.

The OS specification allows up to Windows 7/32 bit.

Don't know where you heard that, but my mongooser is working fine with IDS.

Also, the SDD front end is for all Jaguar cars, until the VIN is read, then the software decides whether to continue with SDD or switch over to IDS.

Read the whole thread. There are tips sprinkled here and there. The training manuals are attached to one of the posts.

SDD will always fail to read the VIN on certain models. This is normal. Enter the VIN manually and click "identify". Then wait for the prompt to launch IDS.

I think I have read the whole lot IIRC...

I have entered the vin, IDS starts to load with a quick splash and then never shows up.

It's not hiding anywhere and task manager does not show anything for it.

I guess I need to try and install again, I have another disk with the software so will give that a try.

Seaching many posts I have not seen (or remember seeing ) a recommended install order for the packages.

Cheers

Extracted from download site 06/12:

5. Run the current FULL IDS_DVD***_FULL.exe Installation file
6. Re-Boot machine (After reboot please allow any firewall pop-ups full access)
7. Run the current VDF_DVD***_V*.exe Installation file
8. Re-Boot machine
9. Download all available Software Updates and run in numerical order.
10. Download and run the current SPA Pinpoint tests

Firewall should be turned off.

Cloned hardware/software from the orient appears to require very specific steps but the order should be the same.

Mongoose directly from Drewtech is highly recommended as is 2nd hand software from independent shops. Data files are required as is Adobe reader and the mongoose driver. Xp SP3 does not appear to be a problem for some.

From the begining:
Xp Sp2/3
adobe reader
mongoose driver
IDS/SDD

A dedicated hard drive (not just a partition) is worth the cost/effort.

Good luck.

Bill

Did you click the link? It's a place called Hands On Tools that I was wondering about, they had a Mongoose for $490.

EDIT: I clicked the link today and now it's $599! So much for finding a bargain.

It's fooled a few people.

If you hover your cursor over the top right corner of the IE/SDD border, you can recover the ability to get out of their god forsaken full screen nanny mode.

IDS takes a good long time to load outside of a VM, within a VM it may take even longer. You may need to wait longer. Look for the process "tabman.exe" as that is what launches IDS. tabman.exe is a foreground process that you can usually see in the top left portion of the desktop. It contains two buttons: "end application" and "launch browser".

It can help to have the cable plugged in at the computer but not at the vehicle OBD port because even with "identify" instead of "read", the thing will still try to communicate with the vehicle. Not plugging in times out faster so that the load starts faster.

IDS/SDS/Teradyne is a suite of software so bad that it wouldn't even survive in the lenient open source world except for the fact that it is the only piece of software annointed by the factory. That's pretty bad.

At the time you posted, the $490 page was showing the original version of the Mongoose. Quite old.

Tried a differnet version CD of 130.x

Followed the install order

Installed Flash and JavaVM

Tried and again when launching "Legacy IDS..." I get a window, the IDS splash and then nothing.

BackReved to XP SP2

Same...

if I run tabman manualy I get the same splash screen and then nothing..

It's starting to annoy me a little

You can't run tabman.exe manually any more. SDD prepopulates the "server" with some parameters and tabman.exe reads those. If you run it manually, the parameters are not populated.

Be aware that some of the install packages say they are finished before they actually are. The only way is to look in task manager for cpu usage of the install process and i/o usage.
