Default Fuel additives

Hi everyone could anyone advise me on the use of redex in diesel engines, i have been told that by using the above or the super diesel sold by shell lubricates your engine and cleans the particulate filter at the same time,i am driving a XF 3.0 V6 PL.
Thanks in anticipation.

I haven't seen the name Redex in over thirty years when they touted a petrol engine additive. It was only good for making smoke then so I'll be amazed if their current diesel additive has any effect on the Jaguar DPF.

Hmmm, not sure of Redex as I've never heard of it, so can't help you there....

As for your XF, it has a self regenerating particulate filter, as long as you get it on the motorway above 40kph or so for about 15-20 minutes, it will automatically do a self regen of the particulate filter.

If you do mostly inner city driving, then you'll need to make sure you take it out on the motorway once or twice a week.

Maybe the handbook says?

Mine says NOT to use additives.

+1 on needing high-speed driving

Also, if this engine is like the 2.7D check very often that the OIL level does not RISE. Semi-panic if it does as you have a failed regen and can write off the engine.

Are you having problems with the DPF or were you considering this as preventative maintenance?

Here's one person's opinion of super/premium diesel fuel:

This is a guy I have a lot of respect for on tech issues

"lubricates your engine" via the fuel system sounds like marketing-speak, but there might be something to the use of additives to clear away carbon deposits.

I wouldn't bother using the additives. The manual recommends against them, and if you are not having any problems there really is no point in using them for nothing. Just use premium fuel like the shell gas you listed above. That should be plenty for prevention.

The only additive I use is for my MG Midget because the engine was made for leaded petrol and can suffer damage run on unleaded as the valve seats aren't hardened. I uswe Castrol Valvemaster Plus, which has a lead substitute, plus an octane booster. The Midget would have been run on 4-Star petrol in the 70 and 80s which was 97 RON, but Premium unleaded is no 95 RON. So far no problems at all.

Modern cars don't need regular additions of additives IMHO

I sometimes put a bottle of Heet during the winter months. The cars sits in the garage most of the winter I just run it about twice a month.

I thought the reliable answer to the particulate filter thing was to get out on the road on a regular basis and give it an Italian tune up (or at least some sustained freeway rpm so everything warms up properly)
