List of users with WDS/IDS willing to help other users
Some of the users here have WDS/IDS setups that can be used to reprogram programmable features (e.g. auto door locking, day time running lights), reset engine/transmission parameters (e.g. throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor orientation), or used to flash the ECM and other programmable modules with updated firmware.
I was thinking that it might be nice to have a list of users (by geography) who would volunteer to help others in their vicinity - maybe for a small fee to offset their effort/cost of their initial outlay for the WDS/IDS systems.
What do you think?

Hi
I like the idea and I hope there is a forum member with WDS/IDS setup with an area of say 20 miles from me and I think that some sort of small fee would be OK.
This is good idea, but I do not know how many forum members have this equipment and if they are within a reasonable commutiable distance.

I have a couple of them, can always lend a hand reprogramming or troubleshooting hardware, have a guy at wrk that works on our circuit boards, he is a wiz with debugging and board level soldering etc. I am in Houston, TX if you need a hand let me know
I am picking up a GenRad Jaguar Diagnostic System, Model number 3110-3105 and bringing it to the silicon valley (near San Jose California). I don't know yet what might be included or working

I have a WDS and a PDU in the DC area.
I haven’t played with the PDU yet since the car was being repainted and now I realize the batteries in the PDU are shot and need to be replaced. (Six sub-C NiCd batteries)

The WDS I have requires a weird NiMH battery that is no longer available in the states. In theory there's an outfit in Australia that still makes them. I found a New Zealand vendor that claims to sell them for $120 and will ship only in NZ. I'll let you know how that works out. I enlisted some friends help and ordered one.
On a lark I went hunting for info on the charge controller chip inside my pack, a TI BQ2040, and subsequently other applications of this chip thinking maybe I could find a cheaper replacement that can be retrofit.
I stumbled on a Czech site that has detailed, DIY instructions for dealing with this chip and this same battery problem found with old Compaq laptops.
This is a GOLD MINE of information for maintaining these old WDS systems.
On notebook batteries controlled by the BQ2092 and BQ2040 (and maybe others)

I printed it out into a PDF but don't see a way to attach that to a post since it seems reasonable that this web page will age out and disappear from the internet and it seems like a small miracle is hasn't yet.
To attach a PDF you need to click the "go advanced" button at the bottom of the reply pane then click the paperclip icon at the top of the new reply box that opens.
You can also probably do it I think by clicking on the insert image icon and then clicking browse your device in the pop up box.

If that page is to be believed then you could use a replacement battery for a Compaq Presario 1200 or 1600 for a direct replacement for the WDS.
You would, of course, have to solder the connector onto the pins of the battery. SEE THE WEBSITE in my earlier post on BQ2092/BQ2040 charge controllers for the battery pin-out on the compaq battery.
Small price to pay since I have not found any other solution.
From this site it lists a pile of battery part numbers I'm going to include here since Compaq seems to have used this arrangement widely it's likely these will remain available for many years.

This is a PDF of the Battery website that explains in detail how to reset a rebuilt WDS battery (also contains the pin-out for the compaq battery that should swap in directly)

Since I have it all apart right now I just metered the leads to the chip and drew up this map. I make no guarantees but it does seem to match up to the TI spec sheet.
White = SMBD = Compaq battery 3
Blue = B+ = Compaq battery 1
Purple = B- = Compaq battery 5
Brown = SMBC = Compaq battery 2
ORANGE = P- = Compaq battery 4

I just get some 17mm or 18mm NiMh batteries and solder them together in the same electrical pattern as the original pack.
Use the little circuit board in correct schematic location!
Sometimes the batteries need to be aligned in a different configuration to fit in the PTU but I have never had a problem getting 18mm batteries (stacked differently) to fit.

Turns out that the controller keeps track of the cell condition and it can easily get in a state where it thinks your new cells are bad even when they're new. I'm in that position right now. (I'm still waiting on the USB doodle that'll let me talk battery to it over that I2C protocol).
Also, issuing a reset appears to require that you also unsolder the power lead to complete the reset.
Anyhow, I also ordered a Compaq battery and picked up a cheapo PCI Express power cable and will let folks know how that works out as well as a replacement hard disk in order to keep a spare since god only knows where you get the driver set for Win98 from for this thing.

I have an original VCM and XP laptop with IDS 118.5 working in Santa Clara; its worked in the past, but won't communicate with the ECU right now. I found one of the sockets in the OBDII port was loose, so I've ordered a replacement connector.
I suggest a short OBDII extension cable when doing the modification authorized by Jaguar.
I chose to modify the extension rather than the original VCM cable. I 'zip-tied' the cables together and 'snipped' the pins as described in the TSB.
Easier to replace the extension cables when they malfunction or wear out than to find another VCM cable.

@sodium: those are valuable information !
Thanks for sharing it.
I'm going to have a look at the exact commands over I2C to the flash and see if I can mimic this into an arduino sketch (as many do not have parallel ports or PS2 connectors on their PCs nowadays)
Hopefully I will succeed
Kind regards,
Alex
