Exclamation need quick answer please

I dropped my car off for new tires this morning and the mechanic just called and said they could not get two off the wheels off. He said the caps over the lugs were spinning. We decided to try to pop the caps off. Is this the right thing to do? I just hung up the phone with him so I can call back if need be. Is this common---what is the right approach. More people here then in the tire and wheel forum so I posted here---thanks Scott----1995 x300

Yup, I've had to do the same from time to time. Those little caps are a snare and dilusion.

Cheers

There is a steel lug nut under the stainless steel stamped cover that is spinning. Sorry, they are already messed up. Off to the wreaking yard for some 'new' ones. You cannot believe what they charge at the Jaguar parts counter and no one has come up with an aftermarket nut that really fits.

That is the reason I do not use or allow the tire shop to use an air wrench on these lug nuts.

You'll have to destroy 'em. As mentioned they're already messed up.

Talking Got it!!

The shop called and said they got them off---the lugs that is. Thanks for the help. I read on line that toyota makes some that fit without the thin covers. Hate to put a jap part on the Jag though. Does anyone make a solid lug especially for our cars? Thanks again---scott

I repeat . . . no one has found a lug nut that correctly fits the Jaguar bolt and wheel. It has been discussed on the forums, but not verified personally, that the wheels are lug bolt centered rather than hub centered which puts a whole new level of precision to question.

If you have truly found a correct replacement you are the hero of the day.

This is timely. I will be having tires put on inside of 2-3 weeks. Would it be worth buying a couple of lug nuts to have on hand?

In my S-type's toolkit, there is a little 'gizmo' that you use on the thief-proof wheelnut (one every wheel). It works even with airchucks used by tyre depots. Does this help? It's in the spare wheel well.

For my education because I see this discussed all the time. I don't have an X or an S just old XJ40's, but they do have a loose cover on the nuts.

However when I remove them I never seem to have any problems. Either by hand or with an air gun. I just whack a socket on the end of whichever tool I am using and attack.

Wheel off.

Is there a difference in the type of nuts that you good people are talking about. Not the anti theft device, but the loose cover arrangement?

TNX in advance.
