Hi,

The headlining is sagging on my 1990 XJS.

What glue is recommended please and am I correct in assuming that a spray glue is the best solution.

banda, if doing your car, I would recommend taking out the whole headliner and the backing board. Spray everything outside the car. Granted, at this point, for another $200 USD, you can get a brand new headliner attached and have something that will last another 30 years. vice risking that you did a good job yourself and having it fall down in a year or two.

If you do want to do it yourself, the best stuff I have found is by 3M. It is upholstery glue, M77(?). something 77.

 

Thanks Thermo.....my mechanic is doing it as he has the experience but was asking me to find out if the Jaguar club recommended a particular glue.

 

I would have an upholstery shop do it and NOT a mechanic. It's not hard but it is a detail oriented repair and it's all about the final look of the repair which is opposite from a mechanic who is trying to repair something so it works with little regard for what it looks like.

I prefer and use 3M 8090 or 8080. I mainly use 8090 as I consider it a better product. But I also glue material to interior parts so want something that will cover as many types of upholstery repair as possible.
Now 3M does have a special headliner glue that might be worth a look? 3M 38808

It's 3M and I have not tried it yet.

Thank you for those wise words which I fully appreciate.
However I need to clarify my original input.
When I said that my 'mechanic' would be doing the job rather than myself then that is technically correct but this particular mechanic is Jaguar trained and spends his life doing full restorations of E-types, Healey 3000s and the like. He works with a bodywork friend of thirty years experience and they do the upholstery between them.
As such and though taken literally my initial comment might be slightly alarming I have every confidence in him.
Thanks for the input re the glue which was a sort of multi marque question because I have a Saab 900 with the same problem and I might try that one myself as the card should come out easily enough through the back door.
