Should i take it to a Certified Tech or a ?
First off all techs on here and everywhere im not dissing anyone! I dont know Jack **** about cars so all the power to ya!
I was in a tire shop yesterday sitten waiting for my car to be done and i hear some loud voices. There where a counter person and a customer kinda arguing about something.
So i hear there talking about who do you trust a payed peace of paper or many years of experience. ( Im asumming there taking about a Mechanic )
Makes me think alittle would or should i take my car to be fixed to a Mechanic with many many years of experience with no ASE or ? or should i take it to someone that just got out of collage with a bought pice of paper showing his skill???
doe's a little paper prove anything beyond plain skill?
kinda makes one think for a moment!
Like i said in the begining im not dissin anyone, i know nothing about cars that is why im on here asking Question's.
I gues that paper/badge would work well in a court room

It's too late...much too late....and probably too many tweets.
I am ASE certified. I can tell you this. It ain't just a "peace" of paper from no stinkin "collage". Instead, I had to pass a test that covered all aspects of modern engine technology and engine management. In parts of the testing I had to diagnose complex faults without actually seeing the car. Many of the questions were submitted to ASE by master technicians decribing complex issues they experienced in the field. In addition to passing the test, I had to show at least to years of practical field experience although I had over 30).
So, even if young, I wouldn't be too quick to put off someone who can pass the ASE technician's exam. On the other hand, a veteran mechanic without ASE certification could be suspect. I've worked with a lot in my age group, some of whom "freeze framed" in time with their mechanical prowess. They still TRY to repair a modern engine with techniques that didn't include the notion of "diagnosis". On today's modern technologies, that can prove dangerously expensive.

the old timers have all my respect! man they have been around playing with adjusting points? what's points?
also as for the ASE testing, you do NOT have to go to school to take the test. its an open test to anyone that wants it.. Im ASE Certified with out going to college , I just called ASE/School seeing when is the next test at my local community college, I then payed the fee & registered Online and went down and took the test. Its not just A test its test's for everything Brakes,A/C and so on.. My point is you dont have to be young/old or rich.. If you know your stuff anyone can take that test.
when you register you have to have some proof of 2 yrs of experience ! ( I have a fren that owns a shop, so i used that as my experience )
shoots i barely made it thru high school...
vince, i would talk to any mechanic first,do some homework and ask a few Question's to really see if he knows his stuff.
