If your multimeter is having issues, I would say to junk it and get something new. They are not that expensive and even a basic VMM will be more than accurate enough for what the back yard mechanic does. Sure, you can buy something like a Fluke 289 and spend $400 USD on it, but a $20 amazon special is going to do what you need too. I have to use some $3000 multimeters at my work because we need something that is accurate to within 0.0025%, but for the backyard mechanic, having something that is say 0.05% accurate is more than good enough.

A normal multimer is not meant to be used in conjunction with the IDS software. They are 2 separate tools. But, you can get a voltage ready when it asks "does this component read ........". What I am getting from your second post is that your IDS computer is having issues, not necesarily that you are having a multimeter issue.

VMM = Vehicle Measuring Module

I used the VMM ONE TIME when I worked at the dealer 'back-in-the-day'.
I needed to check the prop shaft for vibration but other than that I never needed it.

Good to have but too expensive unless you have a shop and use it regularly.

are you actually using SPA and a VMM? that's a first

get a real scope and use the factory wiring diagram
