Default Shift Knob Removal

How does one remove the wood shift knob on a 2001 VDP, then replace it with a new one? Do you just grab it and twist counter clockwise, or do you have to grip the bottom metal piece then twist, or what? Thanks.

Mine comes off nice and easy with some of the afore mentioned twisting.

I'd be interested to know is there a threaded insert on the gear knob, and if so what's the size.

My reason for asking is I have access to a nice Lathe, and some very nice exotic woods, e.g. Ebony, Snakewood, Heartwood, Walnut, Wenge Lacewood, and some others.

If there's a standard thread then I'd be up for turning my own, and potentially making more for members here, this would be based on the price of materials and shipping only.

Good question. I really have no idea, though.... On another note, what kind of lacquer finish would you use to get that factory hard look and feel?

My initial approach would be to start with a friction based polish and sealer, then from there apply multiple coats of poly varnish with light steel wool abrasion in between coats.

I also think that with some woods the friction polish and sealer maybe be sufficient, the fun is going to be finding the combination that delivers the best results.
