Default AJ126 Rebuild

Hey, I've got AJ126 which has got engine knock. I'm about to pull the engine out soon, but my guess is that there would be some bad bearings (and crankshaft beyond repair). I know JLR don't sell the parts, but all I can find is stuff from China. Has anyone successfully used these parts? Used engines are hard to find in my area (eastern EU) as these vehicles with these engines are not that common. I've had one quote on used engine (supposedly engine has done 44k kms) for 8.5k (incl. labour), which might not be that bad, but it's still used engine. Asked my JLR dealer and they should be able to get new shortblock (AJ813606) for 5.4k. I wanted to DIY rebuild, but I'm scared of the Chinese stuff.

And the reason for the knock? Bad oil, no Oil? Water contamination?

If it is has overheater on the way out, I would not bother, and change it out for an exchange engine.

I would find the root cause first, and identify the requirements.

LR parts are cheaper and more (slightly more) obtainable. Chinese engine parts are variable, but recommended not for internal engine parts.

AJ126 units are in a few modals XF,F,& LR,s and others with minor changes. Sump pan etc.

Few You tube videos on change out of the AJ 126.

Mr Tibbs did a AJ133 rebuild, Not for the light hearted.

I don't know yet, have to drain it first. I bought the car like this so I have no idea what happened and if it overheated. Is there some way to find out? I guess it's only possible if it's twisted thus measurable. I'd buy OEM parts, but they don't sell them as far as I know. I mean mainly bearings, crank, pistons, etc.. I know the engine is used in various cars, but those cars are mostly diesels in EU. There might be more petrol V6 in UK or US though.

Hey, I finally got to strip the engine down. Indeed, it was bearing as suspected. Thankfully, it was conrod and not mainbearing, so the block is not damaged. I guess I need a new crank 🥲
Is there any chance AJ133 and AJ126 share main and conrod bearings? Either I'll buy king bearings or I'll have to buy chinese stuff.

Are oversized bearings a possibility? Caused by? Oil problem? Is it the only bearing? It spun?

Sorry forgot to reply. I think it could be a possibility, but I bought another crank with new set of bearings. I think it was caused by degraded oil - the car has got its first service record after ~52k kilometres and 18 months after initial inspection. Cannot tell if it had been changed before this record at independent shop or dyi, I just assume the worst. It was just destroyed and the debris damaged/scratched other bearings.

Yeah. I bought the chinese stuff. The car has done a bit more than 150km so far and everything seem to work. It took me a bit more than it should as I had to order parts and had lot of stuff going on. Also, I didn't have the best conditions (took the engine out in front of my house, with car being on jack stands). I think it could be done in a week or two if you've got time and everything you need. The biggest challenge were the parts. You have to be careful and make them weigh the rods and stuff. I'd order everything separately not in sets. Also, I've got some issue with knock sensor so that one might be better to change as well when the supercharger is off. Ordered both and they are just 20€ each (HELLA 6PG 013 114-321). I might have left it unplugged though 😁 If you need anything, like advice or repairshop manuals, just let me know.

Default I’m in the same boat as you rebuilding my engine completely.

I wanted to ask you if these oversized 0.75mm pistons are good, my engine ended up having some head damage but it was very little and can be fixed with some boring of the engine. Here’s the link https://www.partmasterhub.com/produc...kwthUoAVZqEjJl
Also what’s parts did you use? And from where did you get them also what do you think of this engine rebuild kit https://www.fridayparts.com/cranksha...kaAhmbEALw_wcB

Aswell as the timing chain kit, please get back to me when you can thank you. https://www.roverparts.com/engine/kits/TCK30/

Also gotta get oversized pistons because my engine heads had a bit of tiny damage but can be fixed at the machine shop. What do y’all think of these 0.75mm oversized pistons they are made in china so just wanted to know if it’s safe to buy them.

Sorry, totally missed your post 😅

Yeah, mine have done almost 6k and seems to be fine. Why did you put only 3 pistons? I bought a set, but one was damaged so I reused one. Does your oil cap smell of petrol? I don't know if it's something with injectors or just it's just in my head. Also, I got a knock that's present mostly only when the engine is warm and in idle 😬
