Default Turboing my 3.6

Let me start off by saying this is a long term build and this will be the start to my build thread.
Anyhow I originally planned a 2jz swap but decided to stick the the jaguar heart. I believe the stock bottom end will hold quite a while until I buy another bare block and go custom pistons and rods. I've built and turboed several motors, including a Maserati powerplant, so this will be a fun learning curve.
The logistics I've done has pointed me to go with a custom tubular header, ceramic coated. I'm thinking a GT30@12 psi with meth injection is a good start. The 3.6 is obviously a good sized motor and a GT30 will let me grow into it.
I'll be sticking with the base distributor setup until I build a megasquirt harness and utilize BMW M50 coils for coil on plug.
The aim is 350whp and this winter will mark the start.

Also I'll have to decide based on space whether to utilize a air to air front mount or a air to water intercooler.
Boost will be controlled via manual controller and I'll use an AFC for injector enrichment. The beauty of using the base distributor prior to megasquirt is obviously easy control of timing VIA MSD ignition and a boost retard module above a given RPM range. Meth injection offers a further safety net.

Other logistics to figure out:
Whether to go draw thru or blow thru for the mass air sensor. Draw thru is more simplistic yet comes with the drawback of having a intake restriction before the turbo which hurts spool. Also it's less forgiving on tuning.
Yet blow thru which places the maf on the charge pipe approximately 6-10 inches from the throttle body which reduces restrictions and offers more accuracy for tuning. I may devise a setup utilizing the corvette ZO6 maf, but draw thru is complicated on a stock ecu. I may run draw thru until I go megasquirt then eliminate the maf and go speed density via Chevy IAT and 4 bar map.

Some updates:
I've decided to embark on an EGR delete to make extra space under the hood. Also, cleaner intake ports never hurt. Additionally I'm going to run an Oddesy lightweight battery to drop some weight.
I am going to plumb a catch can to prevent excess crankcase pressure and build up. They key is to use a baffled can and I'm searching for the perfect candidate. This will keep everything clean and safe as IMO the factory crankcase system sucks.
On that same note I'm gonna measure the ID and length of the factory hose and use Samco silicone hose to replace it. Silicone hose doesn't build up gunk nearly as bad and won't age rapidly.
I believe I've decided to go blow thru for the MAF and utilize the stock MAF. I don't think clearance will be an issue as I'm going to utilize an electronic fan and in lieu of that I'm going to use a bar and plate front mount intercooler.

Updates:
Found my catch can and ordered it, will be doing my own homemade filter and baffling, pics to follow Wednesday to Friday next week which gives it time to arrive and me to toy with it.

Also found a godsend through Jegs. MSD ignition system that is actually laptop programmable for timing down to each 100rpms with boost pressure sensitive mapping. I will be placing an order for that soon.

Additionally I have access to nickle plating so my header will be nickle plated. I've decided to go with a Cummins Holset HX35 turbo as it is very comparable to the GT30R at a fraction of the cost and is as durable as they come.

great thread!
you say this winter or have you started already?

and i think the speed density idea is more usable setup!

i too have done some turbo modded cars, and S/D is easier for future mods, more available components.

good luck

Magic. I had a 2jz in my c200 merc. It was a weapon. What rear housing on the GT30? It will easily hit that power and be on boost very early. I had a 35r with 1.06 rear on the 2jz and it was on full boost around 3800rpm. I've just finished the stroker in my supra too.

I was originally going to go with a 2JZ but will be sticking with my Jaguar 3.6
I'm going to utilize a Holset HX35 with a T3 housing. I've run these numerous times with great success. I strayed away from the 30R to go cheaper and the HX is bulletproof and with the anti surge ring will be great for lower initial boost.

we call that anti-surge ring,, "the whistler", off boost can hardly hear it, but when its comin up on the boost, everyone turns and looks, some with a thumbs up.

hey, its all about the fun of things!!!,

Question,
How do the exhaust emissions rules work in Ohio in regards to "visual" inspections by the local smog test shops? Here in Ca there's no way that they'll allow anything that doesn't look stock in there, 'been there..done that.
